A Family On a Mission
At Our Simple Things, we’re a family-owned, small-batch skincare brand based in Houston, Texas, creating purpose-driven products with clean, natural ingredients. Our journey started out of necessity—when I (Melissa) developed a painful PUPPs rash during pregnancy, I couldn’t find relief in anything off the shelf. Out of that struggle, I made what would become our first product: the Grounded Tallow Balm. My midwife shared it with others, and word quickly spread.
Soon, my husband Josh and I found ourselves hand-pouring balms in our kitchen—nine months pregnant and all—because the difference it made was worth sharing. Today, we continue to build this business together, crafting products rooted in faith, family, and the belief that skincare should be simple, safe, and actually work.

Our mission is to provide whole-ingredient, essential-oil-free skincare that supports sensitive skin and healing journeys. The Family Behind the Formulas
Did we decide to start a company when I was 9 months pregnant? Yes. Are we crazy? Perhaps. But crazy is sometimes what it takes to shake things up, and that’s exactly what we’re doing at Our Simple Things.
As a mother of three, I’m intimately familiar with the struggle of wanting to provide the best for your family without blowing your budget. It’s this understanding that fuels my passion for creating natural skincare products that are safe, effective, and affordable. Our products are crafted from real ingredients, with a focus on essential-oil-free formulations and time-tested traditions that I trust to nourish my own family’s skin—and I am excited to share them with you.
This is truly a family-owned business. My husband, Josh, is an integral part of Our Simple Things. He brings his mathematical mind and logistical skills to every aspect of what we do—whether it’s helping with formulations, fine-tuning our handmade processes, keeping things running smoothly behind the scenes, or working alongside me at local markets, where he’s known for striking up sports talk with the dads while their families browse our products. Together, we manage everything: sourcing ingredients, making each batch by hand, designing and applying labels, maintaining our website, packaging orders, and shipping them out with care. Every single aspect of this small-batch skincare company is handled by us, and we pour our love and dedication into every step.
I’ve always had a deep love for science and how things work. Even while majoring in graphic design, I filled my college electives with chemistry, botany, and food science—just for fun. That curiosity shows up in how we research ingredients and formulate our products. Josh, a proud Texas A&M engineering grad (whoop!), brings a love for efficiency and clean systems—and balances it all with a down-to-earth sense of humor that makes him a favorite with returning customers.
We meticulously research every ingredient that goes into our products to ensure that each one serves a purpose and is chosen with intention. Everything we create is made to be used by our own family first—if it’s not good enough for us, it’s not good enough for you. So yes, starting a company in my ninth month of pregnancy may have been a little crazy—but then again, sometimes it’s the “crazy” ideas that turn out to be the most rewarding.
