What Are Calendula Flowers?

Calendula flowers are the yellow to deep orange flower heads of Calendula officinalis, an herb in the Asteraceae family. It is often called pot marigold, but it is a different plant from the Tagetes species that are also sold as marigolds.

The flowers contain several groups of plant compounds, including triterpenoids, carotenoids, flavonoids, phenolic acids, saponins, and small amounts of aromatic compounds. The triterpenoids include faradiol and its esters, which are central to calendula’s anti-inflammatory research. Carotenoids such as lutein, beta-carotene, flavoxanthin, and related pigments create the flower’s gold and orange color and contribute antioxidant activity.

The ingredient we use is organic, dried Calendula officinalis flowers infused into oil. This is not calendula essential oil or an oil pressed from the flowers. It is a whole-flower botanical infusion that draws the oil-compatible side of calendula into a gentle topical base.

A Long History in Skin Care

Calendula’s name reaches back to classical Rome, where it was connected with the Kalends, or the first day of the month. The medicinal record becomes clearer in late medieval and Renaissance European herbals. By the sixteenth century, writers such as Leonhart Fuchs and John Gerard were recording calendula as a food, cosmetic plant, and household herb.

Generations of herbalists prepared the flowers for tender, inflamed, burned, or damaged skin. Calendula became especially well known in European wound care, where it was used in ointments, poultices, washes, and oil infusions.

That tradition is still formally recognized. The European Medicines Agency lists calendula flower preparations as traditional herbal medicines for minor skin inflammation and as an aid in healing minor wounds. Modern studies now help explain why people kept returning to this golden flower.

Why We Love It

Organic Flowers Matter in an Oil Infusion

We choose organic calendula because the entire dried flower spends a long time in oil. Under USDA organic rules, synthetic substances are prohibited in crop production unless they are specifically allowed. That takes many conventional synthetic pesticides off the table before the flowers ever reach us.

The oil itself is another reason this matters. Many pesticide compounds are lipophilic, which means they prefer fats and oils over water. In one study, researchers used six vegetable oils to pull 32 tested pesticide residues from an aqueous ginseng extract into the oil phase. Average transfer into the different oils ranged from about 84% to 98%. In the canola-oil test, almost all of the organochlorine pesticides moved into the oil rather than remaining in the water-based extract.

The study used ginseng rather than calendula, but the chemistry is the important part: oil can be very good at collecting pesticide residues. We want to infuse calendula, not pesticides. Starting with organic flowers is the most sensible place to begin.

Faradiol Esters and Calming Inflammation

Calendula’s lipophilic extracts are especially rich in triterpendiol esters, including faradiol laurate, faradiol myristate, and faradiol palmitate. These are nonvolatile, oil-compatible compounds, not simply part of the flower’s scent.

In topical research, the anti-inflammatory activity of different calendula extracts rose with their faradiol ester content. A second study isolated faradiol myristate and faradiol palmitate and found that both reduced swelling in a dose-dependent way in an animal model. Free faradiol produced an effect similar to a dose of indomethacin containing the same number of molecules in that test.

I found this especially interesting because it explains why a calendula oil infusion can be so valuable. The flower’s soothing reputation is connected to substantial, fat-friendly molecules that naturally belong in an oil-based preparation.

Skin Barrier Recovery and Irritant Dermatitis

A double-blind human trial compared an emollient containing 1% supercritical carbon-dioxide calendula extract with the same cream base and with no treatment. Twenty volunteers first received a controlled irritant exposure on small areas of the forearm, creating a model of irritant contact dermatitis.

By day 4, the calendula-treated skin had significantly greater hydration than both the base cream and untreated skin. Hydration remained higher than the untreated area through day 8, and water loss through the skin was lower than the untreated area on day 3. Calendula added a measurable barrier-recovery benefit beyond the emollient base itself.

Dryness, inflammation, and a weakened barrier are also important parts of eczema, so this research is relevant to eczema-prone skin. The study model was irritant contact dermatitis, giving calendula direct human evidence for hydration and recovery after irritation.

Wound Healing and Tissue Repair

Calendula’s wound-care history is supported by both cell research and human research. In a fibroblast study, low concentrations of calendula flower extracts encouraged the cells to multiply and move across a scratch in the cell layer. Fibroblasts help build the collagen-rich framework of repairing skin, so their movement and activity matter during tissue repair.

A randomized human trial followed 38 acute wounds on the hands and fingers that were healing by secondary intention. Nineteen wounds received a standardized Calendula officinalis extract and 19 received mineral oil. Average epithelialization time was about 8.6 days with calendula and 13.2 days with mineral oil, and the measured healing rate was faster in the calendula group.

This is a strong bridge between ancestral use and modern research. Herbalists valued calendula around minor wounds for generations, and current studies have measured effects on fibroblast behavior, epithelialization, and the speed of skin closure.

Diaper Rash and Other Dermatitis Research

Calendula has been studied on real rashes, not only general redness. In a randomized, double-blind trial, 66 infants with diaper dermatitis received either calendula ointment or aloe cream three times a day for 10 days. Both groups improved, and the calendula group finished with significantly fewer rash sites.

Calendula has also been studied during breast-cancer radiation treatment. In a phase III trial of 254 people, grade 2 or greater radiation dermatitis developed in 41% of the calendula group and 63% of the trolamine group. The calendula group also reported less radiation-related pain. A later trial did not find the same prevention advantage, so the clinical record is mixed, but the earlier study remains an important piece of human research on severely stressed skin.

Together with the newer contact-dermatitis trial, these studies give calendula a wider research record than the word soothing might suggest. Diaper rash, irritant contact dermatitis, and radiation dermatitis are distinct conditions, yet all involve inflammation and disruption of the skin barrier.

Antimicrobial and Antifungal Research

Calendula petals also have a legitimate antimicrobial research record. A 2012 laboratory study tested methanol and ethanol petal extracts against clinical bacterial and fungal isolates. The methanol extract was more active against most of the bacteria, and both extracts showed strong activity against the tested Candida strains.

Those fungi included Candida albicans, Candida glabrata, Candida parapsilosis, and Candida krusei. Candida matters in skin care because it can contribute to yeast rashes and can complicate moist, irritated areas such as diaper rash and skin folds.

The study used concentrated alcohol extracts rather than an infused oil, so it maps the antimicrobial potential of the flower more than the exact strength of an oil infusion. It still establishes a clear antibacterial and antifungal thread within calendula research and helps explain why the plant became so closely connected with traditional wound and rash care.

Antioxidants and Golden Pigments

Calendula’s color is part of its chemistry. Modern analyses have identified a complex carotenoid profile in the petals, central florets, and full flower heads. Those pigments include lutein, beta-carotene, flavoxanthin, and many related compounds, and their levels change with the variety, growing conditions, and part of the flower tested.

Carotenoids are fat-soluble antioxidants, so oil is a natural home for them. They help protect lipids from oxidation and contribute to the warm gold or orange shade of a calendula infusion. The flower’s flavonoids and phenolic acids add another antioxidant layer, even though the exact balance that moves into oil depends on the carrier, time, temperature, and ratio of flowers to oil.

We do not use calendula simply for color. The pigment, triterpenoids, antioxidant chemistry, and long record of topical use all come from the same flower.

Why the Oil Infusion Matters

An oil infusion favors calendula’s lipophilic, or oil-compatible, fraction. That includes the faradiol esters and carotenoid pigments discussed above, along with other nonvolatile triterpenoids. These are different from the small volatile compounds that make up an essential oil.

This gives us more than fragrance. The whole dried flower contributes calming triterpenoids, protective pigments, and a broad botanical background in a form that spreads easily and gently across the skin. Using dried flowers also keeps water out of the infusion while giving the oil long contact with the plant material.

Calendula belongs to the Asteraceae family, so people who are sensitive to plants in that family can occasionally react to it. For most people, its long topical history and modern research make it one of the most useful flowers to place in an oil infusion.
