What Emu Oil Is
Emu oil comes from the fatty tissue of the emu, Dromaius novaehollandiae, Australia’s tallest native bird. The fat is rendered, filtered, and prepared into a smooth skin-conditioning oil.
Unlike an oil pressed from a seed or nut, emu oil is animal-derived. We believe that is worth saying plainly. It is not vegan, and it carries a very different history from the plant oils beside it on an ingredient list.
Most of emu oil is made of triglycerides carrying oleic, linoleic, palmitic, and stearic acids. The exact balance can vary with the bird, its diet, and the way the oil is rendered, refined, and stored.
Our emu oil is sourced from Australia, where emus are native and wild populations still live. We like knowing where an ingredient begins, especially when its place and history are such an important part of understanding it.
Traditional Use and Cultural History
Long before emu oil appeared in jars and ingredient lists, Aboriginal peoples of Australia used emu fat as food and medicine. Historical and ethnographic records describe it as a liniment, skin moisturizer, and wound dressing, including use for soreness, dry or weathered skin, burns, cuts, and other injuries.
The emu itself is far more than a source of oil. Across Aboriginal Australia, emus are connected with Country, food, kinship, story, and law. Practices and meanings differ among communities, so there is no single “Aboriginal use” that belongs to everyone in exactly the same way.
A 2021 study by Margaret Raven, Daniel Robinson, and John Hunter makes an important point: the modern emu oil industry rests in part on Indigenous knowledge and innovation that long preceded commercial research. That history deserves credit, not a footnote.
Why We Love Emu Oil
It Gives Dry Skin Flexible, Lasting Comfort
Emu oil spreads easily, softens rough patches, and leaves skin feeling supple rather than stiff or waxy. Its fatty acid balance helps explain that feel. Oleic acid gives the oil fluid slip, linoleic acid belongs to the family of fats used in the skin barrier, and palmitic and stearic acids add richness and protection.
Human research supports more than a pleasant texture. In an early double-blind pilot study, emu oil received favorable ratings for moisturization, spread, and overall cosmetic feel compared with mineral oil. A later study followed 70 breastfeeding women using an emu oil-based cream and found increased skin hydration within 24 hours, with the greatest improvement in the skin that began the driest.
It Travels Far Beyond the Surface
Emu oil’s reputation for deep penetration has direct laboratory support. Researchers used infrared microscopy to follow its unsaturated components through layers of human skin in a laboratory model. Those components accumulated about 270 micrometers beneath the surface, well beyond the outermost barrier. The oil also interacted with skin lipids and keratin, the structural protein that helps give that barrier its strength.
That depth is unusual. In separate human-skin research, soybean, almond, jojoba, avocado, and paraffin oils were found mainly on the surface or within the uppermost layers of corneocytes. Another analysis of almond oil, jojoba oil, paraffin oil, and petrolatum found that the tested oils did not penetrate deeper than about 11 micrometers.
A separate in vivo imaging study of human skin visualized tiny capillary loops about 60 micrometers beneath the inner forearm and about 150 micrometers beneath the fingernail bed. The studies did not test emu oil and capillaries together, so they do not prove that emu oil entered those vessels. What they do show is that emu oil components reached depths that overlap and extend beyond the range where small superficial capillaries can be present. That is significant because the common plant and mineral oils in the comparison studies did not travel nearly so far.
Many oils do valuable work by remaining near the surface and slowing moisture loss. Emu oil appears to behave differently. Its deeper movement helps explain its absorbent feel and why researchers study it as a penetration-enhancing carrier. How another ingredient travels still depends on that ingredient and the complete formula, but emu oil brings more than surface-level conditioning.
It Helps Calm Red, Uncomfortable Skin
Inflammation is the body’s alarm system. It is necessary, but when the signal stays turned up, skin can remain red, itchy, or uncomfortable.
In a 2018 cell study, researchers activated immune cells as though an inflammatory alarm had been sounded. Emu oil lowered two chemical signals that help keep that alarm going, nitric oxide and tumor necrosis factor alpha, while leaving the cells’ cleanup activity intact. Earlier animal studies also found topical anti-inflammatory activity across several emu oil samples.
There is a useful human signal too. In a one-month split-face clinical trial involving 126 people with seborrheic dermatitis, emu oil significantly improved itching, redness, and scaling. Hydrocortisone and clotrimazole were stronger for some symptoms, while emu oil improved redness more than clotrimazole. We value the study because it shows measurable calming activity in real human skin, not only in a laboratory dish.
Atopic dermatitis is a common form of eczema, and newer research offers an encouraging early signal. In an atopic-dermatitis-like mouse model, emu oil reduced water loss through the skin and abnormal epidermal thickening while lowering inflammatory activity. That points to both barrier and calming support for dry, itchy, eczema-prone skin, but it is preclinical evidence, not yet a human eczema trial.
Emu Oil Supports Skin Renewal and Collagen
Keratinocytes build most of the epidermis, the protective outer portion of skin. In laboratory research, emu and other ratite oils encouraged human keratinocyte growth and quieted activation signals from inflammatory white blood cells. Different oil samples produced different strengths of response, which is one reason quality and handling matter.
A 2024 laboratory and animal study found that emu oil accelerated closure and resurfacing of acute skin wounds, supported collagen formation, and helped immune cells shift from the inflammatory stage toward the rebuilding stage. That is promising repair biology and helps explain the interest in emu oil for skin that looks stressed, fragile, or slow to feel comfortable again.
Most collagen and repair findings still come from cells or animal wound models rather than controlled anti-aging trials in people. Even at this early stage, they give emu oil a credible place in conversations about skin renewal, collagen support, and healthy-looking resilience.
Its Quality Is Part of the Science
Emu oil is sometimes reduced to one fatty acid, but the research points to the whole oil. Its fatty acids shape how it spreads, conditions, and moves through skin, while smaller components may contribute to antioxidant and calming activity.
Processing and storage matter too. Researchers comparing several ratite oils found meaningful differences in oxidation and antioxidant activity from one sample to another. An ingredient name tells only part of the story. Where the oil came from, how it was prepared, and how carefully it was handled all affect what reaches the finished formula.
