What Is Carrot Seed Oil?

Carrot seed oil is the fixed oil pressed from the seeds of Daucus carota. The oil we use is organic and cold-pressed, so it is made by mechanically pressing the seeds rather than steam-distilling them or extracting them with chemical solvents.

That distinction matters because the name carrot seed oil is sometimes used for very different ingredients. Cold-pressed carrot seed oil is a nonvolatile, fatty oil. It is made mostly of triglycerides, along with smaller amounts of phenolic compounds, tocopherols, tocotrienols, and other naturally occurring seed constituents. Carrot seed essential oil is an aromatic distillate with a very different chemical profile, and carrot-root oil is usually a separate oil infused with the familiar orange root.

Cold pressing gives us the seed’s fatty oil in a simple form, with its emollient fatty acids and minor antioxidant compounds still together. There is something beautiful about a tiny seed carrying both the next generation of the plant and a protective reserve of oil. This method lets us work with that oil much as God provided it.

Why Organic Matters

We choose organic because a botanical oil begins in the field. Under USDA organic crop standards, land must be free from prohibited substances for at least three years before harvest. Growers must rely first on practices such as crop rotation and biological, mechanical, and physical controls, while synthetic substances are prohibited unless they are specifically allowed.

That gives organic sourcing a verified agricultural standard before the seed is ever pressed. For a concentrated botanical oil that will remain on the skin, the way the plant was grown matters to us.

A Seed with a Long History

People valued Daucus plants and their aromatic seeds long before the familiar orange carrot existed. Ancient Greek and Roman records describe wild carrot preparations for a wide range of purposes, and Dioscorides recorded the plant in the first century. A modern review of wild carrot describes traditional antiseptic and anti-inflammatory uses among the many ways different cultures worked with the plant.

Carrot itself has changed greatly over time. Population-genomics research found that cultivated carrot was domesticated during the Early Middle Ages in the region from western Asia into central Asia. The high-carotenoid orange carrot was selected much later, during the Renaissance, probably in western Europe.

The preparations used by our ancestors were not all the same, but the long attention paid to carrot seeds is clear. That matters to us. Ancestral knowledge came from generations of close observation, and modern chemistry now helps explain why the seed and its oil remained useful.

Why We Love It

We love organic, cold-pressed carrot seed oil first for its antioxidant chemistry. Its fatty acids and emollient texture are valuable, too, but the antioxidant fraction is what makes this small seed oil stand out to us.

Antioxidant Power from the Cold-Pressed Oil

A 2005 Food Chemistry study examined the antioxidant compounds extracted from cold-pressed carrot seed oil itself. The researchers measured significant activity across several laboratory methods, including ABTS and DPPH radical scavenging, oxygen radical absorbance capacity, and metal chelation.

I found this especially interesting because the researchers were studying cold-pressed seed oil, not borrowing results from carrot seed essential oil or the orange root. The oil responded in several different antioxidant tests, showing that it carries more than one kind of protective chemistry.

Antioxidants are important in skin care because everyday UV exposure, air pollution, and normal metabolic activity can create reactive molecules that place stress on skin lipids and proteins. Carrot seed oil adds an antioxidant fraction while also softening the skin’s surface, which makes it useful for daily care of dry, weather-exposed, and mature-looking skin.

Antibacterial Activity in Laboratory Testing

A 2023 study compared carrot seed oils produced through cold pressing, hexane extraction, and Soxhlet extraction. The oils showed antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, with the extraction method affecting the amount of active compounds in the finished oil.

This is especially relevant to us because cold pressing was one of the methods studied. Along with its antioxidant compounds, carrot seed oil carries constituents that can help discourage certain bacteria in laboratory testing.

Tocopherols and Tocotrienols

Cold-pressed carrot seed oil also contains tocols, the vitamin E family that includes tocopherols and tocotrienols. A 2016 analysis measured 258 milligrams of total tocols per kilogram of carrot seed oil. Most of that amount was made up of tocotrienols, with gamma- and alpha-tocotrienol as the largest individual forms.

These compounds help protect oils from oxidation and add to the oil’s broader antioxidant profile on the skin. Their presence also helps explain why carrot seed oil offers more than its basic fatty acids alone. Exact levels naturally vary with the seed variety, growing conditions, pressing, and storage, but this research confirms that cold-pressed carrot seed oil carries a measurable family of antioxidant compounds.

Oleic and Linoleic Acids for Soft, Supple Skin

Published analyses of cultivated, cold-pressed carrot seed oil show that it is rich in unsaturated fatty acids. Across several samples, oleic acid generally made up about 76 to 82 percent of the oil, while linoleic acid contributed roughly 8 to 13 percent. A 2016 study measured monounsaturated fatty acids at 81.8 percent of the oil it tested.

Oleic acid gives an oil slip, spreadability, and a softening feel. It helps the oil move easily across rough or tight skin and blend well with other lipids. Linoleic acid is an essential fatty acid used in the skin’s own barrier lipids. Together, they give carrot seed oil a light emollient quality that helps dry skin feel more flexible and comfortable.

Carrot seed oil from wild and cultivated varieties can have different fatty-acid profiles, so one laboratory number should not be assigned to every bottle. The consistent point across the research is that cold-pressed carrot seed oil is largely unsaturated and brings a useful mixture of skin-softening lipids.

Moisture, Smoothness, and Anti-Aging Support

When the surface of the skin is low in lipids, it can feel rough, tight, or flaky. A fixed oil spreads into a thin emollient layer, helping smooth the spaces between dry surface cells and slow the escape of moisture. This is a physical benefit of the oil, and it can be felt soon after application.

Carrot seed oil’s combination of emollient fatty acids and antioxidant compounds gives it real anti-aging value in skin care. It helps defend against oxidative stress associated with premature skin aging while supporting softer, smoother, and more resilient-looking skin.

Formulation research supports that use. In a 2019 study, emulsions containing 2 to 6 percent carrot seed oil showed antioxidant activity, and skin-tissue and biochemical findings supported their potential as skin-rejuvenating preparations. In a 2022 study, researchers used 4 percent carrot seed oil and followed six volunteers for four weeks. Skin-moisture readings increased, while analyzer scores for spots, pore size, and wrinkles decreased. Together, these findings support carrot seed oil for hydration, smoothness, and a softer appearance of fine lines.

Everyday Support Around UV Exposure

We do not use carrot seed oil as sunscreen. Its main value to us is its antioxidant power, but its behavior around UV light is still worth mentioning.

In a 2019 laboratory study, the tested carrot seed oil material showed dose-dependent UVB absorbance. Its in-vitro SPF measurement increased from 3.74 at a 2 percent concentration to 6.08 at 6 percent. When 6 percent of the oil was incorporated into an emulsion, the measured value reached 6.92. The same emulsion also showed antioxidant activity, and the animal portion of the study found healthier skin-tissue measurements after UV exposure than the untreated control.

A second formulation study in 2022 found an in-vitro SPF value of 20.28 for a nanoemulgel containing 4 percent carrot seed oil, compared with 13.94 for a conventional emulgel containing the same amount. That difference is a good example of how droplet size, distribution, and the rest of a formula can change the way an ingredient interacts with UV light.

The oils in these studies were not fully characterized as the same organic, cold-pressed fixed oil we use, so their SPF numbers belong to the exact preparations that were tested. Even so, the research shows that carrot seed oil can contribute measurable UV absorbance and antioxidant support in a finished formula. It may be helpful for the ordinary in-and-out, day-to-day sun exposure that is part of life, but it is not a substitute for a tested broad-spectrum sunscreen when sunburn protection is needed.

Carrot seed oil does not need to carry an entire preparation by itself. We value it as one part of a complete blend, where its antioxidants, tocols, oleic acid, linoleic acid, and light emollient texture can work alongside other beneficial fats and botanical ingredients.

That is often how plant ingredients make the most sense to us. Each one brings its own useful chemistry, and together they create something more complete than any single ingredient alone.
