What Is Ceylon Cinnamon?
Ceylon cinnamon is the dried inner bark of Cinnamomum verum J.Presl, an evergreen tree in the laurel family that is native to Sri Lanka. The older botanical name Cinnamomum zeylanicum still appears in research papers and ingredient records, but both names refer to the same species.
The Ceylon cinnamon we use is organic. Its inner bark is thin and pliable, so it curls into delicate, many-layered quills as it dries. This is one of the easiest ways to distinguish it from cassia cinnamon, which forms thicker, harder pieces of bark.
Ceylon cinnamon carries both aromatic and nonaromatic plant compounds. Its aromatic fraction is usually led by trans-cinnamaldehyde, with smaller amounts of compounds such as eugenol, linalool, cinnamyl acetate, and beta-caryophyllene. The bark also contains polyphenols, procyanidins, catechins, and tannins. Together, these compounds help explain its warming, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antifungal activity.
Researchers have studied ground bark, water and alcohol extracts, essential oil, and isolated cinnamaldehyde. Each preparation concentrates a different part of the bark, but together they give us a fuller view of what Ceylon cinnamon can provide.
An Ancient Bark Rooted in Sri Lanka
Ceylon cinnamon belongs first to Sri Lanka. Skilled peelers remove the rough outer layer of harvested stems, loosen the tender inner bark with traditional tools, and lift it in long, thin sheets. Those sheets are layered together and dried into quills. It is careful work, and much of it is still done by hand using knowledge passed down through generations.
We appreciate the people who continue this craft. There is something worth honoring in a useful plant being tended and prepared with skill rather than treated as an anonymous commodity.
Cinnamon has traveled through some of the world’s oldest spice routes and has been valued across South Asian, Middle Eastern, North African, Mediterranean, and European traditions. Ancient records do not always identify cinnamon by the botanical standards used today, but they make one thing clear: fragrant cinnamon bark was precious long before modern laboratories began studying it.
Cinnamon is even named in Exodus 30:23 among the costly aromatics used in the holy anointing oil. That passage does not give us a modern species identification, but it does show how highly cinnamon was valued in the ancient world.
Traditional medical systems used cinnamon as a warming aromatic for digestive and respiratory complaints, aching joints, pain, inflammation, and other concerns. Generations of use are a record of human observation. Modern research is now beginning to explain why our ancestors kept returning to this bark.
Why We Love It
Ceylon cinnamon is far more than a familiar scent. We love it for the way one bark brings together warmth, surface-circulation support, antioxidant compounds, anti-inflammatory activity, and broad antimicrobial potential.
Warmth and Surface Circulation
Cinnamaldehyde activates TRPA1, a sensory channel found in nerves and other tissues. When this channel is activated in the skin, it can create a warming sensation and widen small surface blood vessels.
In a 2015 study of 24 healthy adults, topical trans-cinnamaldehyde increased both skin temperature and local blood flow. A 2023 human study also used cinnamaldehyde-induced dermal blood flow as a measurable sign of TRPA1 activity.
This gives us a clear scientific explanation for cinnamon’s traditional reputation as a warming, invigorating botanical. The studies used isolated cinnamaldehyde rather than whole bark, but they show exactly how one of the bark’s best-known compounds can increase warmth and circulation at the skin’s surface.
Antioxidant Protection and Anti-Aging Support
Ceylon cinnamon bark is rich in phenolic antioxidants. In a 2006 laboratory study, a methanolic bark extract scavenged several kinds of free radicals, donated hydrogen, chelated metals, and slowed oxidation in a linoleic-acid system. At the highest concentration tested, the extract inhibited oxidation by 93.3% in that model.
This is important for skin because oxidative stress contributes to dullness, uneven tone, loss of resilience, and the visible signs we associate with aging. Cinnamon’s antioxidant compounds can help defend oils and skin lipids from oxidation, making antioxidant and anti-aging support one of the clearest reasons we value the bark.
Anti-Inflammatory Support
A 2017 study tested Ceylon cinnamon bark essential oil in cultured human dermal fibroblasts, cells that help build and maintain the skin’s connective tissue. At a very low concentration, the oil reduced several inflammatory protein markers and influenced gene pathways connected with inflammation and tissue remodeling.
The study used a specific essential-oil preparation, but it still shows that cinnamon’s aromatic compounds can influence inflammatory signaling in human skin cells. This fits its long traditional use for aching, stiff, and uncomfortable areas and helps explain why cinnamon continues to appear in warming body preparations.
Antibacterial and Antifungal Activity
Ceylon cinnamon has shown broad activity against bacteria and fungi in laboratory research. Bark preparations and their aromatic compounds have been studied against organisms relevant to acne, fungal skin concerns, yeast overgrowth, and infected wounds.
A 2018 study of commercial essential oils found that Cinnamomum verum bark oil contributed some of the most noteworthy activity against Cutibacterium acnes, then called Propionibacterium acnes, and Staphylococcus epidermidis. These bacteria are closely connected with acne-prone skin.
Ceylon cinnamon also has strong antifungal research. Bark and leaf oils have inhibited Candida species as well as dermatophytes including Trichophyton rubrum and Trichophyton mentagrophytes, fungi associated with concerns such as athlete’s foot, ringworm, and fungal nail infections. A 2020 study found that both bark and leaf oils were fungicidal against Candida albicans and the difficult-to-treat Candida auris, with bark oil showing particularly strong activity.
Another study found that Ceylon cinnamon bark oil caused cell-wall remodeling and defects in normal cell division in Candida albicans. The 2020 study also documented membrane damage and blocked the yeast’s change into its invasive hyphal form. I find that especially interesting because it begins to show how the ingredient works, not simply that fungal growth slowed.
Acne, Sebum, and Redness
A small 2019 human study tested a gel containing 0.5% Cinnamomum verum bark essential oil on 20 people with mild-to-moderate facial acne. After eight weeks, total acne lesions fell by 47%, inflammatory lesions by 42%, and non-inflammatory lesions by 48%. Researchers also measured decreases in sebum and redness.
This was a preliminary study, but it moved beyond laboratory testing and measured changes on human skin. The results support Ceylon cinnamon’s relevance to acne-prone skin, especially where excess oil, inflammation, and microbial imbalance overlap.
Support for Wound Repair
Several animal studies have examined Ceylon cinnamon in prepared wound applications. A 2012 study found that ointments containing 1.5% or 3% ethanolic bark extract accelerated wound closure and epithelialization in mice.
In 2019, researchers studied a hydroethanolic Cinnamomum verum extract in diabetic mice. The preparation improved re-epithelialization, keratin production, collagen-related measures, antioxidant status, and inflammatory balance. Another 2019 study used a Ceylon cinnamon bark-essential-oil ointment on infected wounds in mice and found faster repair, lower bacterial counts, greater antioxidant capacity, and changes in growth factors, collagen, and keratin associated with healing.
The studies used specific extracts and ointments, but the consistency across different wound models is what stands out. Ceylon cinnamon influenced several parts of repair at once, including microbial control, oxidative balance, new surface formation, keratin, and collagen. This supports its long use around damaged or stressed skin and shows real promise for restorative formulations.
Ceylon Cinnamon, Not Cassia
Ceylon cinnamon and cassia are different plants. Ceylon cinnamon is Cinnamomum verum, with thin layered bark, a softer aroma, and naturally very low coumarin. Cassia comes from other Cinnamomum species and generally has thicker bark and much more coumarin.
A 2012 market study found only trace coumarin in a verified Cinnamomum verum sample, while products identified as cassia contained far more. Coumarin is most relevant when cinnamon is eaten frequently, but the difference is still one more reason botanical identity matters. We choose Ceylon cinnamon intentionally, not simply anything sold under the common name cinnamon.
Part of the Whole
We do not view Ceylon cinnamon as a one-ingredient answer. We value it as one useful part of a complete preparation, bringing warmth, surface-circulation support, antioxidants, and microbial balance alongside the other ingredients around it.
God made plants as complex mixtures, and we prefer to work with that complexity rather than reducing the bark to one fashionable molecule. Cinnamaldehyde matters, but so do the smaller aromatic compounds, polyphenols, procyanidins, and tannins that come with the bark.
A Note on Skin Sensitivity
Ceylon cinnamon is an active, warming bark. Concentrated cinnamaldehyde and cinnamon bark essential oil can cause stinging, redness, irritation, or contact allergy, especially when applied undiluted. In the 2019 acne study, brief burning and redness were common, even though the gel contained only 0.5% bark essential oil.
Its strength is part of why we love it and why it deserves careful formulation. A balanced finished preparation is very different from rubbing essential oil or a concentrated cinnamon paste directly onto the skin. Anyone with very reactive skin or a known cinnamon or fragrance allergy should patch test first.
