What It Is

Eucalyptus is a large genus of aromatic trees and shrubs in the myrtle family, Myrtaceae. Kew records the genus as native from parts of the Philippines through New Guinea and Australia. The leaves are dotted with oil glands that release their familiar fresh, evergreen scent when the plant material is crushed or warmed.

At Our Simple Things, we use organic eucalyptus leaves as a whole-botanical infusion in Wildwood Salve. We do not add eucalyptus essential oil. Distillation concentrates the plant’s volatile fraction, while a leaf infusion is far gentler and draws a different slice of the plant into the finished formula.

The leaves naturally contain aromatic compounds such as 1,8-cineole, also called eucalyptol, along with tannins, flavonoids, phenolic acids, macrocarpals, triterpenes, and other constituents. The exact chemistry varies with species, harvest, storage, and extraction method. That broader profile is what makes the leaf more than a source of fragrance.

Traditional Use and Cultural History

The human story of eucalyptus begins on Country. Aboriginal peoples have lived with, cared for, and learned from Australian eucalyptus species across countless generations. These trees have held medicinal, practical, ecological, and cultural importance, but there is no single universal “Aboriginal use.” Knowledge differs by Nation, Country, species, season, and preparation.

One well-documented example comes from Dharawal knowledge. A 2016 paper developed with botanist and Dharawal Elder Aunty Fran Bodkin describes young leaves from certain species being warmed over a low fire so the smoke could be inhaled, while mature leaves from particular species were boiled, cooled, and rubbed onto the affected area. The paper also records that the age of the tree, the surrounding plant community, and the place where it grew could matter.

We respect that specificity. Our organic leaf infusion is not a claim to reproduce Dharawal medicine. It is a modern skincare preparation that recognizes a much older truth: eucalyptus leaves have long been valued for both aromatic and external care.

Why We Love It

They Help the Skin Hold On to Moisture

Ceramides are fats in the outermost layer of skin that help seal the spaces between surface cells. When that lipid structure is depleted or disorganized, water escapes more easily and skin can feel dry, tight, rough, or reactive.

In a 2012 study, a defined eucalyptus leaf extract increased ceramide levels in cultured human keratinocytes and in experimentally dried human skin. On the skin, the extract improved water-holding and barrier function. Macrocarpal A, one compound in the extract, also increased ceramide production and several genes involved in ceramide metabolism in a dose-dependent way.

A later study followed 20 adults with winter-dry skin on their legs. Compared with a placebo moisturizer, the formula containing eucalyptus extract improved hydration and barrier-related measures and increased ceramide NP after 28 days. This is the strongest human-facing reason we pay attention to eucalyptus leaf chemistry: a defined extract influenced the skin’s own moisture architecture, not merely the feel of the product on top.

They Bring Calming Chemistry to Unsettled Skin

The Dharawal-guided 2016 study tested ethanol leaf extracts from 17 eucalyptus species in activated macrophage cells. The extracts reduced production of nitric oxide and tumor necrosis factor alpha, two signals involved in inflammatory activity, although potency varied substantially by species.

That variation is important. It confirms that “eucalyptus” is not one interchangeable ingredient, but the repeated activity across species gives a plausible biological basis for the leaves’ long association with inflamed or uncomfortable conditions. In a salve for dry, weather-stressed, post-outdoor, or easily irritated-feeling skin, that calming potential makes sense as part of a complete formula.

They Fit Naturally Into Barrier Care for Eczema-Prone Skin

A single-blind, four-week study included 44 Japanese adults with mild atopic dermatitis during summer. Twenty-seven participants used a gel containing a pseudo-ceramide and eucalyptus extract twice daily, while 17 used no moisturizer. Dryness improved more in the treated group, and redness, itch, forearm hydration, and quality-of-life scores improved only in that group.

Because the study tested a combination moisturizer, it cannot tell us how much of the result came from eucalyptus alone. It does show that eucalyptus leaf extract has a credible place in barrier-focused formulas for eczema-prone skin, especially beside ingredients that replace or protect skin lipids. That is how we use it: as a supporting botanical inside a thoughtful salve, not as a stand-alone cure.

Their Aroma Brings Cold-Season Comfort

The familiar eucalyptus aroma comes largely from volatile leaf molecules, especially 1,8-cineole in many species. Cineole has been studied well beyond fragrance. In a randomized, double-blind trial of 152 people with acute nonpurulent rhinosinusitis, oral cineole improved the combined symptom score more than placebo over seven days, including measures such as nasal obstruction, secretion, headache, and pressure-related discomfort.

That trial used swallowed, purified cineole, not a whole-leaf salve, so the dose and route are different. It still provides useful context for eucalyptus’s strong cold-season association. When a tiny amount of Wildwood is placed on the external skin beneath the nose, the naturally aromatic portion of the infused leaves is noticeable with each breath and can create a fresh, clearer-feeling sense of comfort. We describe the experience as aromatic support, not as physically opening the sinuses or treating an infection.

They Show Antibacterial and Antifungal Potential

Eucalyptus leaf chemistry has shown activity against both bacteria and fungi, and the evidence is not limited to distilled oil. In a 2022 study, ethanol extracts of Eucalyptus globulus leaves inhibited Bacillus subtilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Candida albicans. Chemical analysis found phenolic acids and flavonoids including chlorogenic acid, catechin, rutin, and quercetin-related compounds, so the preparation captured far more than the leaf’s volatile aroma.

The aromatic fraction has its own evidence. A 2011 Eucalyptus globulus essential-oil study tested 17 microorganisms and found particularly strong laboratory activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Streptococcus pyogenes, and Candida albicans. Together, the studies show that both a solvent-extracted portion and the distilled volatile fraction can hinder microbial growth. This gives eucalyptus a scientifically grounded role as a protective, clarifying botanical, although the finished salve itself has not been tested as an antibiotic or antifungal treatment.

Whole Leaves Give Us More Than Essential Oil

A 2022 Eucalyptus globulus study separated the distilled essential oil from the phenolic-rich water left after hydrodistillation. The oil was dominated by 1,8-cineole, while the water carried gallic acid and other phenolic compounds. At non-toxic concentrations, the two preparations produced favorable effects across several skin-related laboratory models, but their chemical profiles and activity were not identical.

This is why we do not borrow essential-oil claims wholesale. Our whole-leaf infusion is its own preparation. It lets us bring gentle evergreen character and a portion of the leaf’s wider chemistry into Wildwood while keeping the formula free of bottled essential oils.

Quick Answers

Are eucalyptus leaves the same as eucalyptus essential oil?

No. A leaf contains volatile aroma compounds plus many nonvolatile constituents. Essential oil is the highly concentrated volatile fraction produced by distillation. Wildwood uses infused organic leaves and contains no added eucalyptus essential oil.

Can eucalyptus leaves help eczema or dry rashes?

The best human evidence is for barrier support. Defined eucalyptus extracts have improved ceramide-related measures and winter dryness, and a combination moisturizer improved dryness, redness, itch, and hydration in a small study of mild atopic dermatitis. We use the leaves to support moisture and comfort, not to claim that they treat eczema or every kind of rash.

What about bug bites and everyday irritation?

Traditional external use and laboratory anti-inflammatory findings make eucalyptus a reasonable supporting ingredient for uncomfortable, post-outdoor skin. Direct human evidence for treating bug bites with whole-leaf preparations is limited, and Wildwood is not an insect repellent.

Why can Wildwood feel good beneath the nose when I am stuffy?

A tiny amount on the external skin beneath the nose lets the leaves’ fresh aroma rise naturally as you breathe. That can provide a clearer-feeling, comforting sensory experience during cold season. Keep the salve outside the nostrils and away from the eyes.

Why do we choose organic eucalyptus leaves?

Organic sourcing fits the way we want to work with a whole botanical: thoughtfully grown, traceable, and without prohibited synthetic agricultural inputs. Organic status does not make every leaf chemically identical or automatically more effective, so careful sourcing and formulation still matter.

Where do we use eucalyptus leaves?

You will find our organic eucalyptus leaf infusion in Wildwood Salve, where it joins grass-fed and grass-finished beef tallow, organic emu oil, beeswax, organic balsam fir needles, and pine gum rosin.
