What is Magnesium Chloride?
Magnesium chloride is a mineral salt made of magnesium and chloride, with the chemical formula MgCl2. In the presence of water, it separates into magnesium and chloride ions. Magnesium is familiar as an essential nutrient, but in skin care it also has an interesting local role in inflammatory signaling, barrier recovery, and the early activity of skin cells involved in repair.
Magnesium chloride is a mineral rather than a botanical, so agricultural terms such as organic do not apply to it. Its quality is better understood through identity, purity, careful sourcing, and testing.
In our formulas, magnesium chloride is not mixed with water to make a brine or so-called magnesium oil. We suspend the mineral throughout a rich tallow-and-oil base. This keeps it dispersed in the balm and is designed to release it gradually as the formula rests on the skin and encounters natural moisture. The surrounding fats provide cushion, slip, and a long-wearing protective layer while the magnesium chloride contributes its mineral and anti-inflammatory character.
We use magnesium chloride as a local skin- and body-care ingredient. These balms are not intended to serve as a magnesium supplement or correct a nutritional deficiency. What interests us is what magnesium chloride can do right where it is applied.
Traditional Use and Cultural History
The use of mineral-rich water for skin and body care reaches back thousands of years. Ancient Greek medicine included bathing in natural springs, and Roman bathing culture later made warm and mineral bathing part of everyday cleansing, rest, and communal care. Across many places and eras, people returned to mineral waters because of how they made dry skin and tired bodies feel.
Historical mineral baths were complex environments rather than isolated magnesium chloride. They brought together water, warmth, rest, and naturally occurring mineral mixtures. The Dead Sea became especially well known for water rich in magnesium salts and for its long association with dry, reactive, and inflamed skin.
Our balm is a modern expression of that much older relationship between minerals and the skin. Instead of a rinse-away bath, we suspend magnesium chloride in tallow and oils for slow, leave-on contact. The form is different, but the intention is familiar: bring a valued mineral directly to an area that could use calm and comfort.
Why We Love It
We love magnesium chloride for its local activity. The most compelling research is not about raising whole-body magnesium levels. It is about what happens in the skin itself, including quieter inflammatory responses, stronger barrier recovery, and changes in the cells that participate in early repair.
It Has Direct Anti-Inflammatory Activity in Human Skin
One of our favorite studies looked at Langerhans cells, the immune sentinels that live in the epidermis and help initiate skin inflammation. Researchers treated the forearms of 12 volunteers with 5% magnesium chloride for 15 minutes on four consecutive days. Magnesium chloride reduced two markers associated with active Langerhans cells, while an equal sodium chloride treatment did not. In a second part involving six volunteers, epidermal cells from magnesium-treated skin were less able to activate T cells.
The researchers also worked with human epidermal cells in the laboratory. Magnesium chloride reduced HLA-DR and B7 molecules involved in antigen presentation and lowered the cells’ constitutive production of TNF-alpha, an inflammatory messenger. We find this study especially meaningful because it shows a specific local effect in human skin, not simply a general association between magnesium and wellness.
An earlier contact-dermatitis study found a similar pattern. Magnesium chloride at 14% and 28% significantly reduced ear swelling in a mouse model of allergic contact dermatitis, while 14% sodium chloride did not. The researchers also tested five people with a known nickel allergy and found that magnesium chloride, but not sodium chloride, suppressed the nickel-induced contact reaction. We find that small human result fascinating because it offers a direct glimpse of magnesium chloride calming an inflammatory skin response.
It Supports Dry, Reactive, and Rash-Prone Skin
A controlled six-week study followed 30 people with atopic dry skin. Each person soaked one forearm for 15 minutes a day in a 5% magnesium-rich Dead Sea salt solution and the other forearm in tap water. The mineral-treated side became more hydrated and showed significant reductions in roughness and redness. In the participants who began with higher transepidermal water loss, the mineral soak also improved barrier function.
This was a complete magnesium-rich mineral salt rather than purified magnesium chloride by itself, but we find the human results especially valuable. Hydration, roughness, redness, and water loss are practical measures that closely reflect what people notice when skin feels dry, reactive, or rash-prone.
Barrier research adds another piece. After researchers disrupted the skin barrier of hairless mice, aqueous magnesium salts accelerated recovery, with magnesium chloride among the salts that showed activity. A magnesium chloride and calcium chloride combination worked even better than magnesium chloride alone. It is an animal model, but it helps explain why magnesium-rich topical care has remained interesting for skin that feels depleted or easily unsettled.
It Can Move Into the Skin Through Hair Follicles
In a 2016 study using excised human skin, researchers visualized magnesium after applying magnesium chloride solutions. Magnesium entered the stratum corneum in a way that increased with concentration and contact time. When the researchers plugged the hair follicles, penetration fell significantly, showing that follicles were an important pathway into the skin.
We love this finding because local activity requires the mineral to reach more than the very top of a dry surface. It also fits naturally with a leave-on balm designed for gradual contact. The study tested magnesium chloride solutions rather than our tallow-and-oil suspension, but it clearly shows that magnesium ions can enter human skin and that hair follicles help them do it.
It Participates in Early Repair Activity
A 2024 study explored magnesium chloride in human keratinocytes, the primary cells of the epidermis. Magnesium chloride increased MMP7, activated the MEK/ERK signaling pathway, and enhanced cell migration in a laboratory scratch model. When researchers silenced MMP7, the migration benefit disappeared, helping them identify a specific mechanism behind the effect.
Cell migration is an important early step in the skin’s repair process. This was cell research rather than a clinical wound study, but we find it exciting because it shows magnesium chloride actively communicating with the cells responsible for renewing the skin’s surface.
It Brings Something Special to Body-Comfort Care
When an area feels overworked, tight, or tired, people naturally reach for touch, massage, and ingredients associated with calm. Magnesium chloride’s local anti-inflammatory evidence is one reason we appreciate it in a balm that can be applied exactly where comfort is wanted.
There is also an encouraging early human study in women with fibromyalgia. Participants applied a magnesium chloride spray to their arms and legs twice daily for four weeks, and the women who completed the study reported improvements on several quality-of-life measures. It was an uncontrolled feasibility study and used a spray rather than a balm, but we find it interesting as part of the broader evidence for topical magnesium chloride in body care.
Our Suspension Is Designed for Slow, Leave-On Release
Magnesium chloride is usually discussed as a bath salt or as a concentrated water-based brine. Our approach is different. We suspend it in tallow and oils so it remains held throughout the balm and is released gradually as the product stays in contact with the skin.
That slow-release design lets the mineral work within a rich lipid base instead of arriving all at once in water. It also gives us the benefits of the whole formula: lasting moisture, comfortable massage glide, and targeted mineral contact in one simple application.
Quick Answers
Is this magnesium balm meant to be a magnesium supplement?
No. We use magnesium chloride for its local anti-inflammatory, skin-comfort, and body-care benefits. It is not designed to correct a magnesium deficiency or replace dietary magnesium. A small two-week cream study also did not find a statistically significant rise in serum or urinary magnesium across the full study group, reinforcing why we keep the focus on local care.
Does magnesium chloride have to be dissolved in water first?
No. Magnesium chloride needs moisture to separate into magnesium and chloride ions, but that water does not have to be added to the formula ahead of time. The mineral is strongly hygroscopic and deliquescent, meaning its crystals readily draw in moisture and begin forming a concentrated solution. Laboratory research has watched magnesium chloride particles make that transition at relative humidity levels well below those commonly found in everyday environments.
There is also a clear precedent in topical formulation work. A granted U.S. patent describes nonaqueous magnesium chloride products with no added water, including versions in which the salt dissolves on or after application to the skin. That patented system uses a different carrier, but the useful principle is the same: magnesium chloride can meet the moisture it needs after application instead of arriving as a premade brine. In our balm, tallow and oils suspend and spread the mineral, then natural moisture at the skin helps it release gradually. A water-based cream is one delivery method, not a requirement.
Can magnesium chloride help eczema, rashes, or reactive skin?
The research is genuinely encouraging. Topical magnesium chloride has quieted contact-inflammation responses and epidermal immune activity in small human studies. A controlled study of magnesium-rich Dead Sea salt in people with atopic dry skin also improved hydration and reduced roughness and redness. We value magnesium chloride as a supportive ingredient for dry, hot, itchy-feeling, or easily unsettled skin.
Can it help tight, sore, or tired-feeling areas?
That is one of the reasons people enjoy magnesium body care. Magnesium chloride brings local anti-inflammatory evidence, while the balm gives the area warmth from touch and unhurried massage. An early four-week feasibility study also found improved self-reported measures after regular magnesium chloride spray use, which we find encouraging for the broader body-comfort use of the ingredient.
Why can magnesium chloride tingle?
Magnesium chloride is a concentrated mineral salt, so it can create a brief tingle when it meets moisture on very dry, freshly shaved, or already sensitive skin. Suspending it in fats and oils is intended to release the mineral more gradually than a water-based brine, but everyone experiences it a little differently.
Is magnesium chloride the same as Epsom salt?
No. Magnesium chloride is MgCl2, while Epsom salt is magnesium sulfate. Both provide magnesium ions when dissolved, but they are different mineral salts with different accompanying ions and formulation behavior.
Is magnesium chloride organic?
Organic is an agricultural term, so it does not apply to an inorganic mineral. For magnesium chloride, the meaningful quality questions are identity, purity, responsible sourcing, and careful testing.
