What It Is

Palo santo powder is the dried, finely ground wood of Bursera graveolens, an aromatic tree native to the seasonally dry forests of Peru and other parts of tropical America. It belongs to the Burseraceae family, the same botanical family as frankincense and myrrh.

Our palo santo powder is wild harvested in Peru. We infuse it into tallow and oils, allowing the wood to share its oil-compatible compounds and distinctive character with the base before the powder is filtered back out. This is a whole-wood infusion, not distilled palo santo essential oil.

The difference matters. Distillation concentrates the most volatile compounds into a powerful essential oil. Infusion creates a softer preparation within the fats and oils that will actually touch the skin. Palo santo resin is also a separate ingredient from the wood powder discussed here.

Traditional Use and Cultural History

Palo santo means “holy wood” or “sacred wood” in Spanish. Long before it became familiar in modern wellness shops, Bursera graveolens held a place in Northern Peruvian and southern Ecuadorian systems of healing, household care, and ceremony.

Ethnobotanical records describe the wood and small stems used as incense or fumigation, added to cleansing baths, and prepared within traditions connected with colds, coughs, discomfort, rheumatic complaints, protection, and restoring a sense of well-being. Among Saraguro healers in southern Ecuador, palo santo was also documented in culturally specific household and ceremonial preparations.

These practices join scent, body, place, family knowledge, and spiritual life in ways a laboratory assay cannot fully measure. We can honor that history without flattening it into a trendy fragrance or turning every traditional use into a modern medical claim.

Its forest origin matters, too. Our powder is identified as wild harvested in Peru, where current forest management work emphasizes legal origin and traceability for Bursera graveolens. Wild harvested means the material grew within its natural ecosystem rather than as a conventional farm crop. For a tree from an ecologically distinctive dry-forest landscape, knowing the species and origin is part of valuing the ingredient well.

Why We Love It

The Oil Infusion Draws Out Its Resinous, Oil-Compatible Chemistry

Studies of palo santo wood and stem oils repeatedly find monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes, although the exact profile changes with geography, plant material, age, and processing. Limonene is often prominent, while alpha-terpineol, menthofuran, germacrene D, carvone, and other aromatic compounds may also appear.

This is where our preparation makes scientific sense. Limonene is very poorly soluble in water and soluble in oils. Finely grinding the wood creates more surface area, while time in tallow and oils gives compatible compounds a place to move. We do not expect an infusion to duplicate a steam-distilled essential oil, and that is not the goal. We want a gentler expression of the wood held within nourishing fats.

Its Wood Chemistry Has Anti-Inflammatory Interest

In one experimental study, a hydroalcoholic extract made from dried Bursera graveolens branches significantly reduced swelling in a mouse ear model. A later dermal study found that the species’ essential oil reduced edema and the overexpression of several pro-inflammatory cytokines, while also showing good topical tolerance under the study conditions.

Those preparations are not identical to our tallow and oil infusion, but I find the agreement between them genuinely interesting. Together, they show a real anti-inflammatory thread running through palo santo research and give us a sound reason to value its oil-compatible wood chemistry around irritated-looking skin.

Its Volatile Compounds Show Antibacterial and Antifungal Activity

A Peruvian study of essential oil distilled from fallen branches reported laboratory inhibition of several bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus, along with Candida albicans. A separate dermal study found activity against Candida albicans, Candida glabrata, and Candida parapsilosis.

These studies used concentrated distilled oils, so they do not tell us the exact strength of a simple wood infusion. Still, the findings are valuable because they confirm that palo santo’s scent-bearing compounds are biologically active, not merely fragrant. We see this as supportive botanical chemistry rather than asking palo santo to act like an infection treatment.

It Brings a Soft Woody-Citrus Scent Without Added Essential Oil

Palo santo has an unusual scent that can feel woody, resinous, softly sweet, and bright at the same time. Its limonene-rich chemistry helps explain the citrus-like lift, while oxygenated monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes add warmer balsamic and earthy notes.

Infusing the powder gives our tallow and oils a subtler botanical character than adding a concentrated essential oil. We love that the fragrance comes directly from the wood we chose to infuse, with no synthetic perfume and no added essential oil.

No. Essential oil is the concentrated volatile material collected through distillation. Our infusion begins with finely ground wood and lets oil-compatible compounds move gradually into tallow and oils. The result is milder and chemically different.

Why infuse palo santo into tallow and oils?

Many of the wood’s best-known aromatic compounds prefer oil to water. An oil-based infusion gives those compounds a compatible home while keeping the finished preparation rooted in the whole wood rather than a highly concentrated essential oil.

Can palo santo help irritated-looking skin?

Palo santo has promising anti-inflammatory evidence from branch-extract and essential-oil studies, including reduced swelling and inflammatory signaling in experimental models. Is palo santo antibacterial or antifungal?

Concentrated Bursera graveolens essential oils have inhibited selected bacteria and Candida species in laboratory studies. An infused salve is a different preparation, so we use those findings to understand the plant’s chemistry rather than describe the finished product as an antibacterial or antifungal medicine.

Is Bursera graveolens endangered?

The IUCN currently assesses Bursera graveolens as Least Concern across its global range, but Peru classifies the species as Critically Endangered under national law. Peru prohibits cutting live palo santo trees and authorizes wood use from naturally dry and fallen material under regulated, traceable management. These classifications are not contradictory. One looks at the species globally, while the other protects it within Peru. Because our powder comes from Peru, legal origin, collection method, and traceability are especially important.

Why does the Peruvian origin matter?

Peru is part of the tree’s native range and holds living traditions around its use. Naming the origin also helps keep the ingredient connected with the dry forest it came from and makes species identity, legal harvest, and traceability easier to discuss clearly.
