What is Castor oil?
Castor seed oil is pressed from the seeds of Ricinus communis, a resilient plant cultivated in warm regions around the world. When extracted through cold-pressing, the oil retains its thick, golden character and its high content of ricinoleic acid, the fatty acid responsible for most of its therapeutic activity. Along with vitamin E, phytosterols, and a unique mix of fatty acids, cold-pressed castor oil has been valued for centuries as both a skin remedy and a beauty treatment (Ekoja & Audu-Peter, 2023).
Why We Love It
Cold-pressed castor oil is one of the most versatile oils we use. Its high concentration of ricinoleic acid gives it powerful anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, making it especially supportive for irritated skin, eczema, dermatitis, and even certain fungal concerns (Thathsarani et al., 2024). It acts as a natural occlusive, helping seal in moisture and reduce transepidermal water loss, which is essential for maintaining a healthy skin barrier (Ekoja & Audu-Peter, 2023).
We also love its role in skin regeneration. Research shows it can help with scar softening, pigmentation, and stretch mark care by supporting collagen renewal and tissue repair (Trehan et al., 2019).
Castor oil is also known to improve scalp health and support hair growth thanks to increased circulation at the follicle level (YAŞA & YILDIZ, 2024). Its rich texture makes it an excellent natural conditioner, taming frizz and adding shine when used in small amounts.
With a low comedogenic rating, it suits most skin types, making it a gentle yet effective choice for face, body, and hair care. Thick, protective, and deeply nourishing, castor oil is a classic that continues to prove itself in modern natural skincare.
