What It Is

Most of us call ginger a root, but botanically it is the underground rhizome of Zingiber officinale. We use organic dried ginger. During drying, some of its 6-gingerol naturally dehydrates into 6-shogaol, making this especially active compound a more important part of the dried rhizome’s chemistry.

We infuse the dried rhizome directly into tallow and oils. As the botanical rests in that lipid-rich base, oil-compatible plant constituents become part of the infusion. These include pungent phenolics such as gingerols and shogaols, the compounds most closely tied to ginger’s natural heat and much of its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory research.

A 2024 oil-maceration study gives direct support to this preparation. When researchers steeped ginger powder in olive oil, the finished oil gained substantially more phenolic content, radical-scavenging activity, and resistance to oxidation. It is a beautiful example of dried ginger contributing measurable functional chemistry to a fat-based infusion.

Traditional Use and Cultural History

Ginger has traveled with people for thousands of years. It holds a long place in Ayurvedic and Chinese medical traditions, where it was valued as a warming plant for digestion, nausea, cold conditions, discomfort, and general vitality.

Dried ginger became a valued preparation in its own right. Chinese materia medica recorded the dried rhizome separately, and modern chemistry now helps explain why it has its own character: drying brings shogaols forward and changes the balance of the rhizome’s pungent compounds.

Ginger also found its way into poultices, compresses, baths, and massage preparations when warmth and comfort were wanted for cold, tired, or stiff areas. That history fits naturally with the way we use it today, slowly infused into tallow and oils for warming body care.

Why We Love It

Dried ginger is exactly the form we want here. Drying brings its shogaol chemistry forward, and infusion gives those oil-loving compounds a place to move into the tallow and oils that form the base of our body care.

Drying Brings 6-Shogaol Forward

During drying, a portion of ginger’s 6-gingerol loses water and becomes 6-shogaol. Research on ginger chemistry describes 6-shogaol as a major bioactive constituent of the dried rhizome, so choosing dried ginger intentionally brings one of the plant’s most interesting compounds into focus.

That matters because 6-shogaol has repeatedly stood out in the research. In a direct comparison of several gingerols and 6-shogaol, it showed the strongest antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity of the compounds tested. We love that the dried botanical we use naturally emphasizes such a well-studied part of ginger.

The Infusion Enriches Its Oil Base

A 2024 study placed ginger powder directly into olive oil through maceration, the same basic principle behind our infusion. Compared with plain olive oil, total phenolics rose from 651.33 to 1,648.64 milligrams of gallic acid equivalents per kilogram, radical-scavenging activity rose from 35.52% to 69.07%, and oxidative induction time increased from 3.99 to 14.51 hours.

Those are meaningful changes. They show that dried ginger can contribute far more than its warm, spicy scent when it spends time in a lipid base. That is exactly what we want from an infusion built directly into tallow and oils.

It Creates a Real Sense of Warmth

Ginger’s pungent compounds communicate with sensory channels that respond to heat. Laboratory work has shown that 6-shogaol strongly activates TRPA1, while gingerols and shogaols also engage TRPV1, the same heat-sensing channel activated by capsaicin. That signaling helps explain the spreading warmth or gentle tingle people notice from ginger-infused body care.

We love having a real mechanism behind the experience. The warmth comes from ginger’s own chemistry, giving cold, tired, or overworked areas a comforting sense of heat during massage.

It Makes Sense for Tired, Stiff, or Overworked Areas

A small 2014 study followed 20 adults with chronic osteoarthritis during seven days of topical ginger use. Across the group, scores for pain, fatigue, overall effect, and function improved from baseline by 48%, 49%, 40%, and 31%, and satisfaction shifted from 80% dissatisfied to 70% satisfied.

Its Anti-Inflammatory and Skin-Stress Research Adds Depth

A 2022 study in primary human endothelial cells found that 6-shogaol reduced immune-cell adhesion and movement across an activated cell layer, lowered adhesion-molecule expression and NF-kappa B activity, and slowed inflammation-related migration and sprouting. We find it fascinating to see the compound emphasized in dried ginger acting at several connected points in the inflammatory process.

A separate 2010 experiment brought ginger directly into a skin setting. Ginger rhizome extract, gingerol, and shogaol reduced inflammatory cytokine production in UVB-exposed human keratinocytes. Ginger treatment also reduced UVB-related epidermal thickening, immune-cell infiltration, and dilation of dermal blood vessels in a mouse model. These findings add a skin-specific layer to ginger’s broader antioxidant and anti-inflammatory story.

It Shows Antibacterial and Antibiofilm Potential

Ginger extracts have inhibited tested bacteria and fungi in laboratory work. Separate research on Candida albicans found that 6-gingerol and 6-shogaol reduced biofilm formation and the transition into hyphal forms associated with fungal virulence. At 10 micrograms per milliliter, 6-shogaol significantly reduced biofilm formation without stopping free-floating yeast growth at that dose.

We like this as another interesting layer of the plant’s chemistry. It gives ginger a credible antibacterial and antifungal-related research story and shows that its constituents can influence not only microbial growth, but also the way Candida organizes itself into a protective biofilm.
