What Is Matcha?
Matcha is the finely milled leaf of Camellia sinensis, the same tea plant used to make green, white, oolong, and black tea. Traditional matcha begins as tencha. The young leaves are grown under shade, steamed soon after harvest, dried without rolling, stripped of coarser stems and veins, and ground into a vivid green powder. Because the whole leaf remains, matcha is different from both brewed tea and a standardized green-tea extract.
The powder naturally contains catechins such as EGCG, caffeine, amino acids including L-theanine, chlorophylls, phenolic acids, fiber, protein, and a small but meaningful fraction of native leaf lipids. Its exact balance changes with cultivar, shade, harvest, processing, and storage.
Matcha can be used as the whole powder or prepared in ways that favor different parts of its chemistry. We currently use organic matcha in our Revive Face Mask, where it joins sprouted oat and calendula in a gentle, clay-free powder.
Traditional Use and Cultural History
Tea has deep roots in China, while the matcha tradition we recognize today was developed and refined in Japan. Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries traces the Uji tea lineage to the late twelfth century. By the sixteenth century, tea ceremony culture and under-cover cultivation had helped shape the dark green, umami-rich tencha that is ground into matcha.
Matcha became part of chanoyu, the Japanese way of tea, with careful preparation, hospitality, and attention to the moment. Its traditional importance is primarily as a tea and living cultural practice. Modern topical use is newer, which lets us honor its history honestly while exploring what contemporary skin research can add.
Why We Love It
A Whole Leaf Rich in Antioxidant Compounds
Direct analyses of matcha consistently find catechins and other phenolic compounds, and laboratory assays show meaningful free-radical-scavenging activity. A 2020 study found that measured antioxidant activity changed with the matcha sample and preparation temperature. A 2024 composition study also confirmed phenolic acids, caffeine, protein, fiber, and unsaturated fatty acids in dry matcha. These were food-chemistry studies rather than topical trials, and we find them valuable because they show what is genuinely present in the whole leaf.
Helps Skin Respond to Environmental Stress
Tea polyphenols have also been studied directly on human skin. In a controlled clinical study, topical green-tea polyphenols applied before solar-simulated ultraviolet exposure reduced visible redness in a dose-dependent way. Treated skin also showed fewer sunburn cells and less UV-related DNA damage.
The study used a concentrated green-tea polyphenol preparation rather than whole matcha, but it offers a compelling look at how tea catechins can help calm oxidative and inflammatory stress in skin. We see this as supportive botanical care that works alongside everyday sun protection.
Encouraging Evidence for Oily, Blemish-Prone Skin
In a 2013 randomized split-face human trial, topical EGCG improved acne over eight weeks. Laboratory work in the same study found effects on sebum pathways, inflammatory signaling, and Cutibacterium acnes, then called Propionibacterium acnes. A smaller human study of a 3% green-tea emulsion also reported lower facial sebum after eight weeks.
These studies used purified EGCG or green-tea extract, which gives us a focused view of one part of tea chemistry. The results are encouraging for understanding why a catechin-rich ingredient like matcha can be especially appealing in care for skin that looks oily, congested, or easily inflamed.
Fine Milling Keeps the Whole Leaf in the Ingredient
Matcha is not simply tea-colored dust. Fine milling increases surface area, and a 2016 laboratory study found that powdering green tea promoted catechin extraction and increased measured inhibition of reactive oxygen species compared with the leaf preparation tested.
Whole matcha also carries more than its water-friendly catechins. A 2024 analysis measured 7.285 grams of fat per 100 grams of dry matcha, with more than 83% of that fat made up of unsaturated fatty acids, especially alpha-linolenic and linoleic acids. Separate HPLC-MS research found that chlorophylls a and b made up an especially high proportion of matcha’s chlorophyll profile. We love that the whole powder keeps these different parts of the leaf together, even though the preparation determines which compounds become most available.

Is matcha the same as regular green tea?
It comes from the same plant, but traditional matcha is made from shade-grown tencha that is steamed, dried without rolling, and finely ground. Instead of steeping the leaf and removing it, matcha keeps the whole leaf present.
Is matcha the same as green-tea extract?
No. Matcha is whole leaf powder. An extract uses a solvent such as water, glycerin, or alcohol to pull out selected compounds, and it may be concentrated or standardized to a certain catechin or EGCG level.
Can matcha support oily or acne-prone skin?
The evidence from specific topical EGCG and green-tea extract preparations is encouraging for excess sebum, inflammation, and blemishes. Whole matcha is not identical to those standardized preparations, but its natural catechin content makes it a thoughtful ingredient for oily or blemish-prone skin.
Is matcha a good choice for sensitive skin?
Tea polyphenols have shown calming effects in human skin research, and matcha can fit beautifully into a gentle formula. With a powder, particle size, concentration, and pressure matter too, so finely milled matcha used with a light touch feels very different from a rough scrub.
Does matcha exfoliate?
Its fine leaf texture can provide mild physical polishing as it is rinsed away. The effect comes from the powder itself rather than an exfoliating acid, and gentleness depends on how finely it is milled and how it is used.
Does matcha hydrate skin?
Matcha is not primarily a humectant or moisturizer. It can contribute to a soft, conditioned feel, while the water-binding and emollient ingredients in a complete formula do most of the hydrating work.
