3 Trees is one of those formulas that feels ancient to me. It is built around three resins: frankincense, myrrh, and palo santo.
This is not an essential oil balm. It is a whole-resin tallow salve, which matters because resin chemistry is different from essential oil chemistry. Essential oils are mostly volatile aromatic compounds. Resins contain heavier, less volatile compounds that do not come through the same way in steam-distilled essential oil. That is the reason I chose frankincense resin, myrrh gum, and palo santo resin instead of simply scenting a balm.
The base starts with grass-fed/finished tallow, organic emu oil, and beeswax. Tallow gives the salve a rich lipid structure. Beeswax gives it staying power and enough grip to work well on beard hair, hands, and rough-feeling spots. Emu oil is included for its fatty acid profile and carrier function. Its oleic-acid-rich profile helps support dermal penetration of lipid-soluble resin compounds rather than leaving the formula only on the surface.
Frankincense resin is especially interesting because whole frankincense contains boswellic-acid-related compounds, including AKBA-associated chemistry, that are not meaningfully present in frankincense essential oil. That distinction is one of the main reasons I use the resin. I wanted the heavier resin compounds, not just the aroma.
Myrrh gum brings its own chemistry. Myrrh resin is known for sesquiterpenoids and furanosesquiterpenes, including compounds such as furanoeudesma-1,3-diene. It has a long history in traditional preparations, and chemically it pairs beautifully with frankincense because both are resinous exudates from trees, but they are not the same material.
Palo santo resin rounds out the formula with a warm, wood-resin profile. I use the resin rather than palo santo essential oil because I want the deeper, heavier compounds that belong in a salve. It gives 3 Trees its warm, earthy character without turning the product into a fragrance balm.
3 Trees works especially well as a beard balm because the texture has enough grip to help coarse facial hair look more groomed without becoming stiff. It can also be used on hands, dry-feeling patches, elbows, knees, or areas where you want a thicker, resin-based salve. The resins give it depth, the beeswax gives it structure, and the tallow and emu oil give it a rich lipid base.
3 Trees Tallow Salve is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, relieve, or prevent irritation, rash, eczema, acne, wounds, infection, scars, stretch marks, inflammation, hair loss, or any medical condition. It is a cosmetic whole-resin tallow salve made for beard care, dry-feeling skin, rough-feeling spots, and people who appreciate resin chemistry without essential oils or synthetic fragrance.
- Made with whole frankincense resin, myrrh gum, and palo santo resin instead of essential oils.
- Uses frankincense resin for boswellic-acid-related compounds that are not meaningfully present in frankincense essential oil.
- Includes myrrh gum for sesquiterpenoids and traditional resin chemistry.
- Uses palo santo resin for warm wood-resin compounds rather than synthetic fragrance.
- Formulated with emu oil for fatty acid profile and carrier function with lipid-soluble resin compounds.
- Built on tallow and beeswax for a rich salve that works well for beard care, hands, and rough-feeling spots.
- Made without essential oils, synthetic fragrance, fragrance oil, or hidden scent blends.
As a Beard Balm
Warm a small amount between your fingers or palms and work it through the beard, focusing on coarse areas and the skin underneath. Start with less than you think you need, then add more if needed. Comb through for a more finished look.
For Dry Skin
Apply a thin layer to dry patches, rough areas, hands, elbows, or other areas that need richer moisture and a little protection.
For Scar-Massage Routines
Use only after the skin is fully closed and no longer open, bleeding, scabbed, or actively irritated. Warm a small amount between clean fingers and massage gently into the area. Do not use on fresh wounds or open skin.
For Men’s Skincare
Apply a tiny amount to dry facial areas or the skin under facial hair. Avoid freshly shaved, broken, or irritated skin until it has calmed.
How Much to Use
3 Trees is concentrated. Start with a pea-size amount for a beard or a very small amount for dry skin. A little goes a long way.
- Grass-Fed/Finished Beef Tallow: Tallow gives 3 Trees its rich lipid base and traditional salve structure. It creates a substantial balm texture that works well for beard care, hands, rough-feeling spots, and areas that need more than a light lotion.
- Organic Emu Oil: Emu oil is included because of its fatty acid profile and carrier function. It is naturally rich in unsaturated fatty acids, especially oleic acid, and is valued in topical formulation for dermal penetration support. In 3 Trees, it helps carry lipid-soluble resin compounds into the skin’s layers while supporting the tallow-based salve structure.
- Beeswax: Beeswax gives the salve structure, grip, and staying power. It helps 3 Trees work as a beard balm and thicker salve without relying on synthetic waxes or stabilizers.
- Frankincense Resin: Frankincense resin contains boswellic-acid-related compounds, including AKBA-associated chemistry, that are not meaningfully present in frankincense essential oil. I use the whole resin because I want the heavier resin chemistry, not just volatile aroma.
- Myrrh Gum: Myrrh gum is a resinous material known for sesquiterpenoids and furanosesquiterpenes, including compounds such as furanoeudesma-1,3-diene. It gives 3 Trees a deeper resin profile and traditional botanical function.
- Palo Santo Resin: Palo santo resin contributes warm wood-resin compounds and gives the salve its grounding aromatic character. It is included as resin, not essential oil, because this formula is built around heavier resin constituents rather than concentrated volatile fragrance compounds.
Scent Note
3 Trees has a deep, resinous, earthy scent from frankincense resin, myrrh gum, and palo santo resin. It does not contain essential oils, synthetic fragrance, fragrance oil, or cologne-like scent blends.
Beard Note
3 Trees is a favorite beard balm because it softens coarse facial hair while also moisturizing the skin underneath. It is not intended to treat beard growth issues, fungal beard, infection, irritation, or any medical condition.
Scar-Massage Note
3 Trees can be used as part of a scar-massage routine only once the skin is fully closed. Do not apply to open wounds, fresh cuts, scabs, stitches, burns, bleeding skin, infected areas, or skin that is actively irritated.
Resin Note
This salve contains whole tree resins. Resins are powerful botanical materials, and some people can be sensitive to them. Patch testing is recommended before broader use.
Texture Note
3 Trees is a salve, not a whipped tallow balm. Beeswax and resins give it a firmer, protective texture that melts with the warmth of your skin.
Patch Test
Patch test before use, especially if your skin is sensitive, reactive, acne-prone, or prone to resin sensitivities. Avoid the eyes, mucous membranes, open skin, and freshly shaved or irritated areas.
Shelf Life
Best used within 9 to 12 months of opening. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct heat or sunlight. Always use clean, dry hands or a clean tool when applying.
What is 3 Trees Tallow Salve?
3 Trees Tallow Salve is a whole-resin tallow salve made with grass-fed/finished tallow, emu oil, beeswax, frankincense resin, myrrh gum, and palo santo resin. It is made for beard care, dry-feeling skin, hands, rough spots, and sensitive skin routines.
Why use resins instead of essential oils?
Resins and essential oils are chemically different. Essential oils are mostly volatile aromatic compounds, while whole resins contain heavier resin compounds that do not come through the same way in distilled essential oils. 3 Trees is made with whole frankincense resin, myrrh gum, and palo santo resin because the resin chemistry matters.
Why is frankincense resin included?
Frankincense resin contains boswellic-acid-related compounds, including AKBA-associated chemistry, that are not meaningfully present in frankincense essential oil. That is why I use the resin instead of only using frankincense essential oil.
Why is myrrh included?
Myrrh gum contains sesquiterpenoids and furanosesquiterpenes, including compounds such as furanoeudesma-1,3-diene. It has a long history in traditional resin preparations and gives 3 Trees a deeper resin profile.
Can 3 Trees be used as a beard balm?
Yes. 3 Trees works well as a beard balm because tallow and emu oil condition the beard area, while beeswax and resin give light grip and shape. It is not a beard-growth product.
Does 3 Trees support beard growth?
No. 3 Trees is not intended to grow hair or treat hair loss. It can help coarse facial hair feel softer and help the beard look more groomed, but it is not a hair-growth treatment.
Can 3 Trees help scars or stretch marks?
3 Trees can be used as part of a massage routine for dry-feeling or textured-looking areas, but it is not intended to treat scars, stretch marks, wounds, or any medical skin condition.
Does 3 Trees contain essential oils?
No. 3 Trees is made without essential oils. The scent comes from whole frankincense resin, myrrh gum, palo santo resin, tallow, emu oil, and beeswax.
- Wildwood Salve for a softer evergreen beard balm and family salve option.
- Radiance Facial Oil for a lightweight facial oil before balm or after cleansing.
- Pine Tar Tallow Soap for an old-fashioned cleansing bar that pairs well with beard and body care.

3 Trees Tallow Salve
Looking for a tallow beard balm with frankincense, myrrh, and ancestral resin care?
Many people search for things like “frankincense and myrrh balm,” “frankincense beard balm,” “myrrh salve,” “palo santo balm,” “resin salve,” “tallow beard balm,” “whole resin balm,” “essential oil-free beard balm,” or “tallow salve for scars” because they want something richer and more traditional than a typical scented balm.
3 Trees fits that search intent, but the product promise stays cosmetic. It is not a scar treatment, beard growth product, rash treatment, irritation treatment, or wound salve. It is a tallow and emu oil salve made with whole frankincense resin, myrrh gum, palo santo resin, and beeswax for beard care, rough-feeling spots, dry-feeling skin, and sensitive skin routines.
The chemistry is the reason for the formula. Frankincense resin contains boswellic-acid-related compounds that are not meaningfully present in distilled frankincense essential oil. Myrrh gum contains sesquiterpenoids and furanosesquiterpenes. Palo santo resin contributes heavier wood-resin compounds. Emu oil supports the carrier function of the balm for lipid-soluble resin compounds.
