3 Trees is one of those formulas that feels ancient to me. It is built around three resins: frankincense, myrrh, and palo santo.

This is not an essential oil balm. It is a whole-resin tallow salve, which matters because resin chemistry is different from essential oil chemistry. Essential oils are mostly volatile aromatic compounds. Resins contain heavier, less volatile compounds that do not come through the same way in steam-distilled essential oil. That is the reason I chose frankincense resin, myrrh gum, and palo santo resin instead of simply scenting a balm.

The base starts with grass-fed/finished tallow, organic emu oil, and beeswax. Tallow gives the salve a rich lipid structure. Beeswax gives it staying power and enough grip to work well on beard hair, hands, and rough-feeling spots. Emu oil is included for its fatty acid profile and carrier function. Its oleic-acid-rich profile helps support dermal penetration of lipid-soluble resin compounds rather than leaving the formula only on the surface.

Frankincense resin is especially interesting because whole frankincense contains boswellic-acid-related compounds, including AKBA-associated chemistry, that are not meaningfully present in frankincense essential oil. That distinction is one of the main reasons I use the resin. I wanted the heavier resin compounds, not just the aroma.

Myrrh gum brings its own chemistry. Myrrh resin is known for sesquiterpenoids and furanosesquiterpenes, including compounds such as furanoeudesma-1,3-diene. It has a long history in traditional preparations, and chemically it pairs beautifully with frankincense because both are resinous exudates from trees, but they are not the same material.

Palo santo resin rounds out the formula with a warm, wood-resin profile. I use the resin rather than palo santo essential oil because I want the deeper, heavier compounds that belong in a salve. It gives 3 Trees its warm, earthy character without turning the product into a fragrance balm.

3 Trees works especially well as a beard balm because the texture has enough grip to help coarse facial hair look more groomed without becoming stiff. It can also be used on hands, dry-feeling patches, elbows, knees, or areas where you want a thicker, resin-based salve. The resins give it depth, the beeswax gives it structure, and the tallow and emu oil give it a rich lipid base.

As a Beard Balm

Warm a small amount between your fingers or palms and work it through the beard, focusing on coarse areas and the skin underneath. Start with less than you think you need, then add more if needed. Comb through for a more finished look.
