Pure Tallow Soap is the plainest soap we make, and that is exactly the point.
There are no essential oils, no synthetic fragrance, no botanical powders, no colorants, no exfoliants, no coconut oil, and no blend of plant oils. It is just grass-fed/finished beef tallow, water, and sodium hydroxide used to make real soap. Once saponification is complete, the lye is consumed in the soapmaking process, and the finished bar becomes a simple tallow soap made for cleansing.
Soap science is different from balm science. In a balm, tallow stays as tallow. In soap, the tallow is transformed. The triglycerides in the fat react with sodium hydroxide and become sodium salts of fatty acids, often referred to as sodium tallowate, along with naturally formed glycerin. That means I do not want to overstate this as if all the delicate qualities of raw tallow stay unchanged in a rinse-off soap bar. What matters most after saponification is the fatty acid profile, the structure of the finished soap, the glycerin naturally created during the process, and the simplicity of what is not added.
Tallow makes a beautiful traditional soap because its fatty acid profile is naturally rich in saturated fats like stearic and palmitic acids, which help create a firm, long-lasting bar with a creamy feel. It also contains oleic acid, which helps round out the skin feel so the bar does not have to rely on coconut oil for cleansing power. Coconut oil can make a soap bubbly and high-lathering, but some people find coconut-heavy soap too stripping. Pure Tallow Soap is intentionally different. It has a gentler, creamier, lower-lather feel that makes sense for people who want a more minimal bar.
This soap is not intended to treat eczema, psoriasis, acne, rashes, infections, wounds, or any medical skin condition. It is a simple, unscented, cold-processed tallow soap made for everyday cleansing, sensitive skin routines, and people who prefer a traditional bar without fragrance, essential oils, coconut oil, or botanical extras.
- Made with one fat source: grass-fed/finished beef tallow
- Unscented and made without essential oils, fragrance oil, or synthetic fragrance
- Coconut oil-free for people who find coconut-heavy soaps too stripping
- Plant oil-free for people who want the simplest possible tallow soap
- No added colorants, exfoliants, clays, botanical powders, or filler oils
- Cold-processed and cured to create a firm, traditional bar
- Tallow’s fatty acid profile contributes to a firm bar with a creamy, lower-lather feel
- Naturally formed glycerin remains part of the finished soap
- Made in small batches in Houston, Texas
For Hands and Body
Lather the bar with warm water using your hands, a washcloth, or a soap saver bag. Wash gently, then rinse well.
For Face
If using on the face, start slowly and patch test first. Avoid the eyes and use a light touch. Follow with Radiance Facial Oil, Rosebud Tallow Balm, or another gentle moisturizer if your skin feels dry after cleansing.
For Children
Use adult supervision and avoid the eyes, mouth, and broken or irritated skin. Rinse well. This is soap, so it can sting if it gets into the eyes.
Make the Bar Last Longer
Keep the bar on a draining soap dish between uses. Handmade soap lasts longer when it is allowed to dry fully instead of sitting in water.
Introduce Slowly
If your skin is very sensitive or reactive, use the soap on a small area first before switching your full routine.
- Grass-Fed/Finished Beef Tallow: In a balm, tallow remains as tallow. In soap, tallow goes through saponification, so the finished bar is not raw tallow sitting on the skin. The triglycerides in the tallow react with sodium hydroxide and become sodium salts of tallow fatty acids, often called sodium tallowate, along with naturally formed glycerin. This is why the most honest science for tallow soap is not about claiming every delicate nutrient survives unchanged, but about the fatty acid profile and the structure it gives the finished bar.
- Tallow-Derived Fatty Acid Salts: Tallow is naturally rich in fatty acids such as stearic, palmitic, and oleic acids. After saponification, these become part of the soap structure. Stearic and palmitic acid soaps help create a firmer, longer-lasting bar with a creamy feel, while oleic acid helps round out the overall skin feel. This is one reason tallow has such a long history in traditional soapmaking.
- Naturally Formed Glycerin: Glycerin is naturally created during the saponification process. In handmade cold-processed soap, that glycerin remains in the bar rather than being removed the way it often is in large-scale commercial soap production. Glycerin is one reason handmade soap can feel different from a very stripped-down commercial cleansing bar.
- Water: Water is used to dissolve the sodium hydroxide and allow the soapmaking reaction to happen. During curing, excess water evaporates, helping the bar become harder, milder-feeling, and longer-lasting.
- Sodium Hydroxide: Sodium hydroxide, also known as lye, is required to make true soap. It reacts with the tallow during saponification and is consumed in the process when the soap is properly formulated and cured. It is not added as an active skin ingredient, and the finished bar should not contain raw lye.
- What Is Not Added: Pure Tallow Soap contains no essential oils, fragrance oils, synthetic fragrance, coconut oil, plant oils, colorants, clays, exfoliants, or botanical powders. For this bar, simplicity is part of the formulation. It is made for people who want cleansing without extra scent, color, scrub, or ingredient complexity.

Scent Note
Pure Tallow Soap is unscented. It does not contain essential oils, fragrance oil, synthetic fragrance, or hidden scent blends. It may have a very mild natural soap aroma from the tallow soap itself.
Lather Note
This is a low-lather, creamy soap. It will not bubble like a coconut-oil-heavy bar because it is made only with tallow as the fat source.
Saponification Note
Sodium hydroxide is used to make real soap. In a properly made and cured bar, the lye is consumed during saponification and is not present as raw lye in the finished soap.
Skin Feel Note
Soap is a rinse-off cleanser, not a leave-on moisturizer. If your skin tends to feel dry after washing, follow with a balm or facial oil while the skin is still slightly damp.
Storage Note
Keep the bar dry between uses. A draining soap dish or soap saver bag helps extend the life of the bar.
Patch Test
Patch test before regular use, especially if your skin is sensitive, reactive, acne-prone, or easily irritated.
Medical Note
Pure Tallow Soap is not intended to treat eczema, psoriasis, acne, rashes, infections, wounds, or any medical skin condition. For persistent or painful skin concerns, check with a qualified healthcare professional.
Shelf Life
Best used within 12 months for the freshest experience. Store unused bars in a cool, dry place with airflow.
What is Pure Tallow Soap made of?
Pure Tallow Soap is made with grass-fed/finished beef tallow, water, and sodium hydroxide used for saponification. Once saponification is complete, the finished bar is tallow soap, not raw lye mixed into a product.
Is this soap unscented?
Yes. Pure Tallow Soap is unscented and made without essential oils, synthetic fragrance, fragrance oil, or hidden scent blends. It may have a mild natural soap aroma from the tallow soap itself.
Does Pure Tallow Soap contain essential oils?
No. Pure Tallow Soap contains no essential oils. This makes it a good option for people who prefer very simple, fragrance-free cleansing routines.
Is this soap coconut oil-free?
Yes. Pure Tallow Soap is made without coconut oil. Coconut oil can create a big bubbly lather, but some people find coconut-heavy soap too stripping. This bar has a creamier, lower-lather feel.
Is this soap plant oil-free?
Yes. Pure Tallow Soap is made without added plant oils. The only fat source is grass-fed/finished beef tallow.
What survives saponification in tallow soap?
The tallow does not remain completely unchanged. During saponification, the triglycerides in tallow react with sodium hydroxide and become sodium salts of tallow fatty acids, along with naturally formed glycerin. The finished bar’s feel comes mostly from that fatty acid profile, the soap structure, the cure, and any unsaponified matter that may remain in the finished soap.
Does this soap still contain vitamins from tallow?
I do not like making strong vitamin claims for soap because saponification is a chemical reaction and soap is a rinse-off product. The better science angle is the tallow-derived fatty acid profile, the naturally formed glycerin, and the simple formula without added fragrance, essential oils, or coconut oil.
Is Pure Tallow Soap good for sensitive skin?
Pure Tallow Soap was made with sensitive skin routines in mind because it avoids fragrance, essential oils, coconut oil, plant oils, colorants, and exfoliants. Everyone’s skin is different, so patch testing is still important.
Can I use this soap for eczema-prone or psoriasis-prone skin?
Many people with reactive or easily irritated skin search for very simple soaps, but Pure Tallow Soap is not intended to treat eczema, psoriasis, rashes, flares, itching, inflammation, or any medical skin condition. It is a simple cleanser that avoids common extras like fragrance and essential oils.
Can I use Pure Tallow Soap on my face?
Some people use it on the face, but facial skin can be more sensitive to soap. Patch test first, avoid the eyes, and follow with Radiance Facial Oil or a small amount of balm if your skin feels dry afterward.
Can children use Pure Tallow Soap?
Many families prefer simple, unscented soap for children, but use adult supervision and avoid the eyes, mouth, and broken or irritated skin. Soap can sting if it gets into the eyes.
Why does this soap have low lather?
Pure Tallow Soap does not contain coconut oil, which is one of the oils commonly used to create big bubbles in handmade soap. Tallow creates a creamier, denser, lower-lather wash instead.
Does this soap contain lye?
Sodium hydroxide, also called lye, is required to make real soap. In a properly made and cured bar, the lye is consumed during saponification and is not present as raw lye in the finished soap.
How do I make the bar last longer?
Keep the bar dry between uses. Use a draining soap dish or soap saver bag and avoid letting the soap sit in standing water.
- Rosebud Tallow Balm for a soft, rose-infused balm step after cleansing dry-feeling or delicate skin.
- Wildwood Salve for a richer evergreen salve after washing hands, body, or beard area.
- Radiance Facial Oil for a lightweight facial oil step after cleansing, especially when skin feels dry or dull-looking.
- Awaken Oil for a lightweight hair, scalp, face, or body oil after showering.

Pure Tallow Soap
Looking for an unscented tallow soap without fragrance, essential oils, coconut oil, or plant oils?
Many people search for things like “pure tallow soap,” “unscented tallow soap,” “beef tallow soap,” “grass-fed tallow soap,” “soap for sensitive skin,” “fragrance-free soap,” “essential oil-free soap,” “coconut oil-free soap,” or “simple soap without additives” when they want a bar that feels more traditional and less complicated.
Pure Tallow Soap was made for that kind of routine. It is a cold-processed tallow soap made with grass-fed/finished beef tallow, water, and sodium hydroxide for saponification. It contains no essential oils, no synthetic fragrance, no fragrance oil, no colorants, no exfoliants, no coconut oil, and no added plant oils.
Because this is soap, the science is centered on what remains after saponification: the sodium salts of tallow fatty acids, the naturally formed glycerin, and the physical qualities that come from tallow’s fatty acid profile. The result is a firm, creamy, low-lather bar for simple cleansing, not a medical treatment or leave-on moisturizer.
