Olive-Derived
What is squalane?
Squalane is a stable, hydrogenated form of squalene, a lipid naturally found in human sebum. When derived from olives, it becomes a plant-based, ethical alternative to shark-sourced squalane. Olive-derived squalane is lightweight, non-comedogenic, and rich in antioxidant compounds that enhance its skincare benefits. This ingredient is prized for its similarity to the skin’s own oils, which makes it both highly compatible and deeply effective (Albini et al., 2025).
Why We Love It
We love olive-derived squalane for its ability to support the skin across multiple needs. As a hydrator, it acts as a breathable emollient that locks in moisture and softens dry areas without clogging pores (Albini et al., 2025).
It also plays an important role in barrier repair, replenishing essential lipids in the stratum corneum and helping the skin recover from dryness, sensitivity, or conditions like eczema and rosacea (Dauber et al., 2023).
Olive-derived squalane also provides antioxidant and anti-aging support. It protects against oxidative stress, helps reduce fine lines, and works synergistically with olive polyphenols to improve elasticity and defend against UV-induced breakdown (Dauber et al., 2023). This makes it an excellent partner for protective skincare.
Finally, it is remarkably well tolerated, even by sensitive or post-procedure skin. Its hypoallergenic and calming qualities make it suitable for use after treatments such as peels or lasers, reducing redness and supporting the skin’s natural recovery (Gallegos-Montes & Méndez, 2023).
Lightweight, silky, and multipurpose, olive-derived squalane is one of those rare ingredients that works beautifully across skin types while offering both protection and comfort.
