Grounded is the balm that started all of this.
During my pregnancies, I dealt with horrible PUPPs rash in the third trimester. By the time I was pregnant with my third, I knew I wanted something I felt comfortable putting on my belly, but I also knew I did not want essential oils, synthetic fragrance, or the kinds of ingredients I was trying to avoid while learning more about hormones, sensitive skin, and daily product exposure.
That experience is what pushed me deeper into formulation research. I started looking at tallow because it made sense as a rich, traditional skin-care fat. I looked at emu oil because of its fatty acid profile and its role as a carrier oil, especially for lipid-soluble compounds. I researched pine, pine gum rosin, frankincense resin, and other forest botanicals because I wanted to understand the actual compounds inside them, not just the way they smelled.
Grounded was not created because tallow skincare was trending. It came from pregnancy, overwhelmed skin, and the need for a balm that felt purposeful, researched, and deeply nourishing without relying on essential oils or common hormone-disrupting ingredients.
The formula starts with grass-fed/finished beef tallow and organic emu oil. Tallow gives Grounded its rich lipid base and protective balm structure. Emu oil is included because it is naturally rich in unsaturated fatty acids, especially oleic acid, and is valued for its ability to support dermal penetration. I use it because it helps carry lipid-soluble botanical compounds into the skin’s layers more effectively than a heavy surface-only balm, while also helping the tallow base work beautifully in real skin-care routines.
From there, I infuse the balm with pine gum rosin, pine needles, frankincense resin, red sandalwood powder, palo santo powder, and rosemary leaves. These are not added as fragrance. They are chosen for their chemistry. Pine gum rosin contains resin acids, including abietic-type acids, which help explain why pine materials have such a long history in traditional salves. Frankincense resin contains nonvolatile resin compounds, including boswellic-acid-related compounds, that are not meaningfully present in frankincense essential oil. That distinction matters because I chose the whole resin, not the essential oil.
Magnesium chloride adds a mineral component to the formula. I do not use it to make medical magnesium claims, but it fits the purpose of the balm: grounding, mineral-rich body care made with ingredients chosen for function, not trend.
Grounded is foresty, rich, earthy, and purposeful. It works beautifully for dry-feeling skin, sensitive skin routines, belly care, hands, feet, elbows, and areas that need something more substantial than lotion. It is especially meaningful to me because the process of making it changed the way I looked at skincare ingredients. PUPPs rash is what sent me into the research, and Grounded is what came out of that research.
Grounded is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, relieve, or prevent PUPPs rash, eczema, psoriasis, itching, inflammation, wounds, infections, or any medical skin condition. It is a cosmetic balm made for dry-feeling skin, pregnancy belly care routines, sensitive skin routines, and people who want body care made with research and purpose.
- Inspired by the user’s real PUPPs rash experience during pregnancy, while staying clearly cosmetic and not positioned as a treatment.
- Made with grass-fed/finished beef tallow for a rich, traditional balm base.
- Formulated with organic emu oil for its fatty acid profile and carrier function, not simply for texture.
- Infused with whole forest botanicals and resins instead of essential oils.
- Uses frankincense resin, not frankincense essential oil, for the nonvolatile resin compounds present in the whole resin.
- Includes pine gum rosin for its resin acids and traditional salve chemistry.
- Made without essential oils, synthetic fragrance, fragrance oil, or hidden scent blends.
- Made for dry-feeling skin, pregnancy belly care routines, sensitive skin routines, and richer body-care needs.
Everyday Use
Warm a small amount between clean fingertips and apply to dry or rough areas as needed. A little goes a long way, so start with less than you think you need and add more only if your skin needs it.
For Sensitive Skin
Patch test first, especially if your skin is reactive or if you are applying it to delicate areas. Because Grounded contains magnesium and resinous botanicals, it may feel more active than our gentler balms.
For Face or Body
Grounded can be used on the face or body when tolerated. For the face, use a very small amount and press it in gently rather than applying a thick layer.
During Pregnancy or Breastfeeding
Grounded was originally made because I wanted something I felt comfortable using during pregnancy, but every body and every pregnancy is different. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or dealing with a medical skin concern, check with your healthcare provider. Do not apply to nipples before nursing.
- Grass-Fed/Finished Beef Tallow: Tallow gives Grounded its rich lipid base and protective balm structure. It creates a substantial, old-fashioned balm texture that makes sense for dry-feeling skin, belly care, hands, feet, elbows, and areas that need more than a light lotion.
- Organic Emu Oil: Emu oil is included because of its fatty acid profile and carrier function. It is naturally rich in unsaturated fatty acids, especially oleic acid, and is valued for its ability to support dermal penetration. I use it because it helps carry lipid-soluble botanical compounds into the skin’s layers while balancing the density of tallow in the finished balm.
- Magnesium Chloride: Magnesium chloride gives Grounded its mineral component. I do not use it to make medical magnesium claims, but it fits the purpose of the balm as grounding, mineral-rich body care.
- Pine Gum Rosin: Pine gum rosin is included for its resin chemistry. Rosin contains resin acids, including abietic-type acids, that help explain the long traditional use of pine materials in salves and skin preparations. In Grounded, pine rosin contributes structure, grip, resin chemistry, and forest-derived botanical function.
- Organic Pine Needles: Pine needles add whole-plant forest constituents to the infusion. They are not used as essential oil. They are infused as part of the broader pine-focused botanical profile of the balm.
- Organic Frankincense Resin: Frankincense resin is chemically different from frankincense essential oil. The whole resin contains nonvolatile compounds, including boswellic-acid-related compounds, that are not meaningfully present in distilled essential oil. I use the resin because I want that deeper resin chemistry, not just aroma.
- Red Sandalwood Powder: Red sandalwood contributes color, botanical depth, and traditional skin-care use. It is included as a whole botanical powder, not as a fragrance ingredient.
- Palo Santo Powder: Palo santo powder contributes warm wood chemistry and resinous botanical character. It is used as a whole botanical powder, not an essential oil.
- Organic Rosemary Leaves: Rosemary leaves are included as an infused herb, not rosemary essential oil. They add traditional herbal constituents and round out the forest-focused infusion.
Grounded was inspired by real pregnancy skin struggles, but it is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, relieve, or prevent PUPPs rash, eczema, psoriasis, rashes, itching, inflammation, wounds, or any medical condition.
Texture Note
Grounded is a rich balm, not a whipped tallow product. It is concentrated, creamy, and melts with the warmth of your skin.
Scent Note
Grounded has an earthy, resinous, lightly woodsy scent from the pine, frankincense, sandalwood, palo santo, and rosemary. It does not contain essential oils or synthetic fragrance.
Magnesium Note
Because this balm contains magnesium chloride, some people may notice a temporary tingling feeling, especially on very dry, freshly shaved, or sensitive skin. Patch testing is recommended.
Color Note
The natural botanicals and resins may give the balm slight color variation from batch to batch. Use a small amount and allow it to absorb before contact with light-colored fabrics.
Patch Test
Patch test before use, especially if you have sensitive or reactive skin. Avoid applying to broken skin, mucous membranes, or areas that are actively irritated.
Shelf Life
Best used within 9 to 12 months of opening. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct heat or sunlight. Always use clean, dry hands or a clean tool when applying.
Does Grounded Tallow Balm contain essential oils?
No. Grounded is made without essential oils. The earthy, resinous scent comes from the ingredients themselves, including pine, frankincense resin, sandalwood, palo santo, and rosemary.
Is Grounded scented with fragrance oil?
No. Grounded does not contain synthetic fragrance or fragrance oil. It has a natural, earthy scent from the whole botanicals and resins used in the formula.
Is Grounded a tallow balm for eczema?
Grounded is not intended to treat eczema or any medical condition. Many people searching for a tallow balm for eczema-prone skin are really looking for a simple, low-fragrance, barrier-focused moisturizer. Grounded was made for dry, sensitive, easily stressed skin, but it is not a drug or medical treatment.
Can I use Grounded for rashes or PUPPs?
Grounded is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent rashes, PUPPs, itching, or any medical condition. The story behind the balm began during my own pregnancy experience, but the product itself is made as a rich, essential oil-free moisturizer for dry, sensitive, barrier-stressed skin. Medical concerns should always be discussed with a qualified healthcare professional.
Was Grounded created because of PUPPs rash?
Yes. Grounded started after I dealt with horrible PUPPs rash during my pregnancies, especially in the third trimester. When I was pregnant with my third, I wanted something I felt comfortable using on my belly that did not contain essential oils, synthetic fragrance, or ingredients I was trying to avoid. That experience pushed me to research tallow, emu oil, pine resin, frankincense resin, rosin, and forest botanicals more deeply.
Does Grounded treat PUPPs rash?
No. Grounded is not intended to treat PUPPs rash, PUPPP rash, itching, inflammation, rashes, eczema, or any medical skin condition. PUPPs rash is part of the origin of the balm because it is what led me to create it, but the product itself is a cosmetic balm for dry-feeling skin, belly care routines, and sensitive skin routines.
Why does Grounded contain emu oil?
I use emu oil because of its fatty acid profile and carrier function. It is naturally rich in unsaturated fatty acids, especially oleic acid, and is valued for dermal penetration support. In Grounded, it helps carry lipid-soluble botanical compounds into the skin’s layers while supporting a richer tallow-based formula.
Why use whole frankincense resin instead of frankincense essential oil?
Frankincense resin contains nonvolatile compounds that are chemically different from the volatile aromatic compounds found in essential oil. Boswellic-acid-related compounds are associated with the resin, not meaningfully with the distilled essential oil. I chose the whole resin because I wanted the resin chemistry, not just the scent.
Does Grounded contain essential oils?
No. Grounded is made without essential oils, synthetic fragrance, fragrance oil, or hidden scent blends. Any scent comes from the tallow, emu oil, magnesium chloride, resins, herbs, and botanicals themselves.
Why does Grounded contain magnesium chloride?
I included magnesium chloride because I had spent time reading research around topical mineral salts, skin barrier function, hydration, and inflammatory pathways. It is one of the ingredients that makes Grounded different from our gentler balms, but Grounded itself is not intended to treat inflammation, eczema, rashes, PUPPs, or any medical condition.
Why does Grounded tingle sometimes?
The magnesium chloride may create a temporary tingling feeling, especially on dry, sensitive, freshly shaved, or delicate skin. If the feeling is uncomfortable, discontinue use and try a gentler product.
Can I use Grounded on my face?
Yes, if your skin tolerates it. Use a very small amount and patch test first. If your facial skin is very reactive, freshly exfoliated, or easily overwhelmed, you may prefer starting with a gentler balm like Rosebud.
Is Grounded good for oily or acne-prone skin?
Grounded is rich and concentrated, so oily or acne-prone skin should start with a very small amount. Some people with oily skin enjoy using tallow balms, but everyone’s skin responds differently. Patch testing is recommended.
Can I use Grounded on babies or young children?
Because Grounded contains magnesium and resinous botanicals, it may not be the first balm I would choose for babies or very young children. For the most delicate skin, consider a simpler, gentler product and patch test first.
What does Grounded smell like?
Grounded smells earthy, woodsy, and resinous. It is not floral, sweet, or perfume-like. The scent comes from the botanicals and resins themselves, not from essential oils or fragrance oils.
Is Grounded safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
Grounded does not contain essential oils or synthetic fragrance, and it was originally created because I wanted something I felt comfortable using during pregnancy. Still, every pregnancy is different. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or dealing with a medical skin concern, check with your healthcare provider. Do not apply to nipples before nursing.
How much Grounded should I use?
Start with less than you think you need. A rice-grain to pea-size amount is often enough for a small area. Warm it between your fingers and press or massage it into the skin.
- Rosebud Tallow Balm for a gentler balm option on delicate, dry, or facial skin.
- Radiance Facial Oil for lightweight facial moisture before or instead of a heavier balm.
- Pine Tar Tallow Soap for a simple tallow cleansing bar before applying balm.
““For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.” John 3:16–17 (ESV)”

Grounded Tallow Balm
Looking for a tallow balm for eczema-prone, rash-prone, pregnacy belly, or sensitive skin?
Many people search for things like “tallow balm for pregnancy belly,” “tallow balm for PUPPs rash,” “PUPPP rash natural skincare,” “tallow balm for eczema-prone skin,” “tallow balm for sensitive skin,” “fragrance-free tallow balm,” or “essential oil-free pregnancy skincare” because they are looking for something simple, rich, and low-irritation for skin that feels overwhelmed.
Grounded was created from that exact kind of need. During my pregnancies, I dealt with horrible PUPPs rash in the third trimester, and that experience pushed me to research tallow, emu oil, pine resin, frankincense resin, rosin, and forest botanicals more deeply. I wanted something I felt comfortable using on my belly, without essential oils, synthetic fragrance, or common ingredients I was trying to avoid.
This balm is not a PUPPs treatment, eczema treatment, rash treatment, or medical product. It is a rich, forest-infused tallow and emu oil balm made for dry-feeling skin, pregnancy belly care routines, sensitive skin routines, and people who want body care formulated with intention, restraint, and ingredient research.

i use Grounded for almost anything: dry skin, rashes, ect. I also like that it doesn’t have an overwhelming smell. The balm works great for my beard too.
I have exclusively been using this Tallow Balm for the past 6 months and my skin has never been better. It nourishing without being greasy. I am an oily girl and was worried Tallow would be too slick on my skin. NOT THIS ONE! The ingredients smell amazing, earthy and soothing. I use it on my face as my daily moisturizer but I also use it on my entire body. It’s great on dry hands and cuticles. It’s great for dry elbow skin. It’s great on abrasions and has actually healed minor abrasions on my skin so quickly. I can’t say enough how much I love Melissa’s Tallow Balm. It is exactly what I needed in my life.
This product has been life saving for my clients with PUPPS. Melissa is dedicated to the science and ensuring her product is organic and free of chemicals. She is brilliant and detailed oriented. I trust her and her products.
I wish I would have taken pictures. It was the most horrible thing I had ever seen…
I was one of the lucky few in the world that developed PUPPS rash at the end of pregnancy and it progressively got worse after birth. The rash had spread to my entire body and was making postpartum extremely difficult.
I reached out to my midwife who gave me Melissa’s information and used her Grounded Magnesium Tallow as soon as I could. Not only did it give me instant relief, but I finally had my first night of not waking up itching myself to death. My rash was almost completely gone after about 7 days. So so thankful for this community and the quality ingredients that Melissa uses.
