Refresh is our softer take on a vanilla mint lip balm.

I wanted something that felt fresh without feeling sharp. So many mint lip balms rely on peppermint essential oil, menthol, cooling agents, synthetic flavors, or that strong tingle people associate with “working.” I do not want that on my lips, and I especially do not want it in a product that gets reapplied throughout the day and inevitably ends up near the mouth.

Refresh is different because the mint and vanilla come from real botanicals, not flavor oils. Organic vanilla beans and organic peppermint leaves are infused into the tallow and Nilotica shea butter base, giving the balm a soft, subtle vanilla mint character without turning it into a candy-flavored product. It is refreshing, but not intense. A bit like mint tea.

The base is the same kind of simple lip care I trust: grass-fed/finished beef tallow, organic Nilotica shea butter, and beeswax. Lips are delicate. They have a thinner barrier, lower water-holding capacity, and less of the natural oil support that other parts of the skin have, which is why I like using lipid-rich ingredients that help the lips feel protected and comfortable. Tallow gives the balm its rich, old-fashioned staying power. Nilotica shea butter gives it that softer glide. Beeswax gives it structure so it stays on the lips instead of disappearing immediately.

The peppermint leaf infusion is intentionally different from peppermint essential oil. Peppermint leaves naturally contain aromatic compounds and polyphenols, but using the whole leaf in an infusion gives a much softer botanical presence than adding a concentrated essential oil. Vanilla beans bring vanillin and other aromatic compounds that give the balm warmth and comfort without needing synthetic flavor.

Refresh is not intended to treat cold sores, severely cracked lips, angular cheilitis, infection, wounds, or any medical condition. For Lips

Apply a thin layer to the lips as needed throughout the day. Refresh is concentrated, so one or two light swipes are usually enough.

Before Bed

Apply a slightly thicker layer before bed if your lips feel dry from weather, mouth breathing, licking, or daily wear.

Before Lip Color

Apply a very thin layer and allow it to settle before using lip color. If you use too much balm first, lip color may not stay in place as well.

For a Softer Mint Feel

Refresh is made to feel subtle, not aggressively cooling. If your lips are very sensitive, patch test first and start with a light layer.

Keep It Clean

Do not share lip balm, and avoid applying directly over active cold sores, broken skin, or infection. Replace the tube if it becomes contaminated.

  • Grass-Fed/Finished Beef Tallow: Tallow gives Refresh its rich, emollient base and old-fashioned staying power. Lips have a more delicate barrier than much of the surrounding skin, with higher transepidermal water loss and lower water content, so I like using lipid-rich ingredients instead of strong flavor oils or irritating actives. Tallow contains a mixture of fatty acids, including oleic, palmitic, and stearic acids, which help create that soft, protective balm feel.
  • Organic Nilotica Shea Butter: Nilotica shea butter is softer and creamier than many heavier shea butters, which is why I love it for lip care. It helps the balm glide smoothly and keeps the texture from feeling too waxy. Shea butter also contains an unsaponifiable fraction with naturally occurring compounds such as triterpenes, tocopherols, sterols, and phenolic components, making it more interesting than a basic filler butter.
  • Beeswax: Beeswax gives Refresh its structure, grip, and light protective finish. It helps the tallow and shea butter stay on the lips instead of melting away too quickly, which matters in a tube lip balm. Beeswax also helps create the smooth, non-sticky finish that makes the balm easy to use throughout the day.
  • Organic Vanilla Beans: Vanilla beans bring the soft, warm side of Refresh. Real vanilla contains aromatic compounds such as vanillin, along with a more complex profile than synthetic vanilla flavor. I use whole vanilla beans because I wanted the comfort of vanilla without a mystery flavor blend, artificial sweetness, or a candy-like lip product.
  • Organic Peppermint Leaves: Peppermint leaves bring the refreshing side of Refresh, but in a very different way than peppermint essential oil. Mentha piperita leaves contain aromatic compounds and plant polyphenols such as rosmarinic acid, caffeic acid, and flavonoids, which are part of why peppermint has such a long history in traditional botanical use. In this balm, the leaves are infused into the base for a softer mint character. Refresh does not contain peppermint essential oil, added menthol, or menthol crystals.

Scent and Flavor Note
