Simple Lip Balm is exactly what I wanted it to be: plain, soft, useful, and not trying too hard.

Lip balm is one of those products that should be simple, but it often is not. So many lip products are full of strong flavors, fragrance oils, essential oils, sweeteners, dyes, or ingredients that make you want to keep reapplying every few minutes. I wanted something simpler than that. What we put on our lips, we inevitably ingest, so I needed something that I felt confident using daily. Something that could live in a purse, pocket, nightstand, diaper bag, or beside the bathroom sink and be used without thinking twice.

The lips are different from the rest of the skin. They do not have the same oil-producing support, and their barrier is more delicate, which is why dry weather, licking, wind, sun, toothpaste, active skincare, and flavored lip products can leave them feeling dry or uncomfortable so quickly. Simple Lip Balm was made around that reality. It is not meant to be flashy. It is meant to give the lips a soft, protective, lipid-rich layer without adding ingredients that do not need to be there.

The formula starts with grass-fed/finished beef tallow because tallow gives the balm its rich, emollient feel and old-fashioned staying power. I paired it with organic Nilotica shea butter because Nilotica shea has a softer, silkier texture than many heavier butters, and it helps the balm glide more comfortably across the lips. Beeswax gives the balm structure and a light protective finish so it stays put without turning into a sticky gloss.

I also love that Simple works beyond the lips in little real-life moments. I have used it as a cuticle cream in a pinch when my cuticles felt dry and I did not have anything else nearby. It is still a lip balm first, but the formula makes sense for small dry areas because it is made from simple fats and waxes, not strong aromatics or active ingredients.

Simple Lip Balm is not intended to treat severely cracked lips, cold sores, infection, angular cheilitis, wounds, or any medical condition. It is a plain, unscented, petroleum-free tallow lip balm made for everyday moisture, softness, and the kind of practical care that gets used over and over again.

  • Made with only three ingredients: grass-fed/finished beef tallow, organic Nilotica shea butter, and beeswax
  • Plain and unscented for people who do not want strong flavors, fragrance, or essential oils on their lips
  • Petroleum-free, with a lipid-rich tallow and shea butter base instead of petrolatum or mineral oil
  • Made without essential oils, flavor oils, synthetic fragrance, sweeteners, dyes, menthol, or peppermint oil
  • Uses organic Nilotica shea butter for a softer, smoother glide than many heavier butters
  • Uses beeswax for structure, staying power, and a light protective finish
  • Useful as a tiny dry-cuticle balm in a pinch
  • Simple enough for everyday purse, pocket, bedside, or diaper-bag use
  • Made in small batches in Houston, Texas

For Lips

Apply a thin layer to the lips as needed throughout the day. Simple Lip Balm is concentrated, so one or two light swipes are usually enough.

Before Bed

Apply a slightly thicker layer before bed if your lips feel dry from weather, mouth breathing, licking, or daily wear.

Before Lip Color

Apply a very thin layer and allow it to settle before using lip color. If you use too much balm first, lip color may not stay in place as well.

For Dry Cuticles in a Pinch

Swipe a small amount onto clean fingertips and massage into dry cuticles when needed. Avoid using on open, bleeding, infected, or actively irritated skin, and keep the tube clean.

Keep It Clean

Do not share lip balm, and avoid applying directly over active cold sores, broken skin, or infection. Replace the tube if it becomes contaminated.

  • Grass-Fed/Finished Beef Tallow: Tallow gives Simple Lip Balm its rich, emollient base and old-fashioned staying power. Lips have a more delicate barrier than much of the surrounding skin, so I wanted a balm built around lipid-rich ingredients rather than strong flavors or active irritants. Tallow contains a mixture of fatty acids, including oleic, palmitic, and stearic acids, which help create that soft, protective balm feel. It is not a medical treatment for cracked lips, but it makes sense in a simple lip balm made to comfort dry-feeling lips and reduce the constant need to reapply.
  • Organic Nilotica Shea Butter: Nilotica shea butter is softer and creamier than many heavier shea butters, which is why I like it so much for lip care. It helps the balm glide more smoothly and keeps the texture from feeling too waxy. Shea butter is also known for its unsaponifiable fraction, which can include triterpenes, tocopherols, sterols, phenols, and other minor compounds that make it more interesting than a basic filler butter. In Simple Lip Balm, Nilotica shea gives softness, slip, and a more comfortable finish on the lips.
  • Beeswax: Beeswax gives Simple Lip Balm its structure, grip, and light protective finish. Without beeswax, a tallow and shea balm can feel too soft or disappear too quickly, especially in a tube. Beeswax helps the balm stay in place, reduces stickiness, and creates the kind of protective layer people expect from a good lip balm. It also makes the formula useful in a pinch on dry cuticles because it helps the balm cling to small dry areas instead of melting away immediately.

Scent and Flavor Note

Simple Lip Balm is unscented and flavor-free. It has only the natural aroma of tallow, Nilotica shea butter, and beeswax. It does not contain essential oils, flavor oils, synthetic fragrance, sweeteners, dyes, menthol, or peppermint oil.

Texture Note

This is a true balm, not a gloss. It should feel soft, smooth, and protective without being sticky.

Cuticle Note

Simple Lip Balm can be used as a cuticle cream in a pinch for dry-feeling cuticles. Because it is packaged as a lip balm, use clean fingers and avoid cross-contamination if you plan to use the same tube on your lips.

Temperature Note

Because this balm is made with real tallow, shea butter, and beeswax, it may soften in heat or firm up in cold temperatures. This is normal for a simple balm made without synthetic stabilizers.

Patch Test

Patch test before regular use if your lips or skin are very sensitive. Discontinue use if irritation occurs.

Medical Note

Simple Lip Balm is not intended to treat cold sores, angular cheilitis, infection, severely cracked lips, wounds, or any medical condition. For persistent, painful, bleeding, or recurring lip concerns, check with a qualified healthcare professional.

Shelf Life

Best used within 9 to 12 months of opening. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct heat or sunlight.

Yes. Simple Lip Balm does not contain petroleum, petrolatum, mineral oil, or synthetic occlusive fillers. It uses tallow, Nilotica shea butter, and beeswax to create a soft, protective balm texture.

Does Simple Lip Balm contain essential oils?

No. Simple Lip Balm is made without essential oils. This is especially important to me for lip care because lip products sit so close to the mouth and are reapplied often.

Is Simple Lip Balm good for sensitive lips?

Simple Lip Balm was made with sensitive lip routines in mind because it is unscented, flavor-free, and made with only three ingredients. Everyone’s skin is different, so patch testing is still recommended if you are very reactive.

Can I use Simple Lip Balm for dry or chapped lips?

Simple Lip Balm can be used for dry-feeling or chapped-feeling lips as part of everyday cosmetic care. It is not intended to treat severely cracked lips, bleeding lips, cold sores, angular cheilitis, infection, or any medical condition.

Why use tallow in lip balm?

Tallow gives the balm a rich, emollient texture and helps create a soft protective feel on the lips. I like it because it gives Simple Lip Balm an old-fashioned, nourishing texture without needing petroleum or a long list of filler oils.

Why use Nilotica shea butter?

Nilotica shea butter is naturally softer and creamier than many heavier shea butters. It helps the balm glide smoothly and gives the lips a softer feel without making the formula overly greasy.

Why use beeswax?

Beeswax gives the balm structure and staying power. It helps the tallow and shea butter stay in place on the lips instead of melting away too quickly.

Can I use Simple Lip Balm as a cuticle cream?

Yes, in a pinch. Simple Lip Balm can be massaged into dry cuticles when you do not have a separate cuticle cream nearby. Use clean fingers, avoid open or irritated skin, and be mindful of cross-contamination if you also use the same tube on your lips.

Can kids use Simple Lip Balm?

Simple Lip Balm is made without essential oils, flavor oils, synthetic fragrance, or sweeteners, which many families prefer. Use adult supervision with young children, and avoid use on broken skin, active cold sores, or areas of irritation.

Does Simple Lip Balm have SPF?

No. Simple Lip Balm does not have SPF and should not be used as sun protection. If you will be in strong sun, use proper lip sun protection.

How often should I apply it?

Use as needed. If you feel like you need to apply constantly, look at possible triggers such as lip licking, dry air, toothpaste irritation, active skincare migrating onto the lips, or flavored products.

Looking for a petroleum-free tallow lip balm for sensitive, dry-feeling lips?

Many people search for things like “tallow lip balm,” “petroleum-free lip balm,” “unscented lip balm,” “lip balm for sensitive lips,” “essential oil-free lip balm,” “natural chapstick alternative,” or “lip balm without fragrance” when they want something simple that does not feel sticky, strongly flavored, or overly complicated.

Simple Lip Balm was made for that kind of everyday use. It contains only grass-fed/finished beef tallow, organic Nilotica shea butter, and beeswax. There are no essential oils, flavor oils, synthetic fragrance, sweeteners, dyes, menthol, peppermint oil, petroleum, or long filler ingredient lists.

The formula is simple, but not empty. Tallow brings a rich emollient feel, Nilotica shea butter adds a softer, creamier glide, and beeswax gives the balm structure and a light protective finish. It is a plain lip balm for people who want moisture, softness, and a more old-fashioned approach to lip care without a strong scent or taste.
